Sociocracy governance is built upon several core principles and concepts, often referred to as its "pillars."
These pillars form the foundation of sociocratic governance and guide its implementation.
The key pillars of sociocracy are as follows:
Consent-Based Decision-Making:
Consent is a central pillar of sociocracy. Rather than requiring full consensus (unanimous agreement), decisions are made if there are no reasoned objections. This means that a proposal can move forward as long as no one has a fundamental objection to it. Consent decision-making allows for more efficient decision-making while still valuing and incorporating input and concerns from all members.
Circle Structure:
Sociocracy organizes groups into circles, also known as teams. Each circle has a specific purpose (aims) and a domain of authority. Circles are nested within one another, creating a hierarchy of circles that can extend from a wider level to more focused teams. This circle structure provides clarity, accountability, and a framework for sharing decision-making.
Double-Linking:
Double-linking refers to the connections between circles. Each circle has representation in the higher-level circle, and there is a liaison or connector role that ensures communication and alignment between circles. This two-way linking structure facilitates information flow and coordination throughout the organization.
(s)Election of Leaders:
(s)Election of Leaders is a sociocratic process of election without a candidate. Leaders or coordinators within circles are typically (s)elected by circle members rather than appointed. These leaders serve for a specified term and can be removed or re-elected when necessary. This election process promotes accountability and ensures that leadership roles are responsive to the circle's needs. For each selection, a term is attached.
Feedback Loops:
Sociocracy emphasizes the importance of feedback loops. Regular evaluations and feedback sessions are conducted to assess the effectiveness of processes, make improvements, and adapt to changing circumstances. This continuous feedback and learning process is a key aspect of sociocratic governance.
Transparency:
Sociocracy promotes transparency in decision-making processes and the sharing of information. This transparency builds trust and ensures that all members have access to the information needed to participate effectively in decision-making.
Inclusivity:
Sociocracy values the input of all members and seeks to include as many perspectives as possible in decision-making. This inclusivity results in more diverse and well-informed decisions.
Empowerment:
Sociocracy empowers individuals to take on roles and responsibilities within circles and to have a say in decisions that affect them. This sense of empowerment fosters engagement and ownership among members.

Circle Meetings:
Sociocracy typically holds regular circle meetings for both governance and operations. Governance meetings focus on policy decisions and circle structure, while operational meetings address day-to-day work and coordination.
Role Clarity:
Clear roles and responsibilities are defined within each circle, reducing ambiguity and ensuring that everyone knows their responsibilities and expectations.
These pillars collectively create a governance system that balances effectiveness, inclusivity, adaptability, and transparency.
Sociocracy is designed to foster collaborative decision-making, accountability, and continuous improvement within organizations and communities.
