What if Perfect Work-Life Balance is Nothing But a Lie?

What if Perfect Work-Life Balance is Nothing But a Lie?

Work-Life Balance has somehow become the new VALUED kid in the block

Everyone talks about it and everyone wants to be associated with it.

A common definition of work-life balance is the state of equilibrium where a person equally prioritizes the demands of one’s career and the demands of one’s personal life.?

Did the responsibilities at work increase?

Are you asked to work longer hours?

Did you get Increased responsibilities at home?

OR is it the children who now need extra attention?

And now you find? all of a sudden you lost that equilibrium and need to gain back that balance.

A concept that worked really well for me and a lot of my students, to look at balance as a composite of rather than an equilibrium between the different demands in life at that point in time.

At different phases of our life, our needs may differ and some components might increase at one point while others may not. For example, when I was planning to have my second baby, I made my well-being take top priority, I accepted that keeping my PhD on the back burner for a while was best for me,? loved becoming a mom for the second time, and my research supervisor even supported my baby break.

I was happy and in flow, ideas continued to flow and even competed in my mind as I was relaxing and enjoying this wonderful motherhood experience. When I came back, I was completely reenergized and recharged and I had a notebook full of downloads waiting to be fleshed and developed. I found myself moving faster than if I kept day in-day out pushing myself to write the dissertation, and in the process procrastinating and feeling guilty that I was not progressing as I should.

You see, “Success is not permanent and failure is not fatal,” our belief system is an evaluation of something and when we accept that change is inevitable, we come to know the right composite for us.

So, do not hesitate to decide, what is the right composite of balance for you right at this moment? is it more ME time? More kids time? Or is it time to focus on that promotion? It is only YOU who knows the right composite for YOU! Be confident in your choice and decision and move on with it!

Absolutely agree with you on this, balancing our lives is a tough mission, while the outside world may keep us busy and entertained, we tend to forget that everything comes from WITHIN. If we ignore what our souls crave for and look only for outside achievements and goals, that’s too bad! Thank you for sharing, I love it ? Dr. Nebila Dhieb

Totally agree. I took a break from my? career in a similar scenario but during that break I was not only able to spend cherished time with my kids,? ?recuperated from some health issues but? also pursued and completed my MPhil at a relaxed pace. Had I not left that coveted position as an Assistant Professor of English at a renowned college, I would not have been able to achieve my goals. Now after that career break I am back teaching English at a state university and also working as IELTS examiner.
