What percentage of PhD students fail in their thesis defence?

According to some digging around, it would appear that the failure to defend the thesis or dissertation is extremely rare; I’ve noted statistics which point to a 1% failure rate. For the PhD student to make it through all the milestones and collapse at the finishing line, it would have to be something very traumatic or unexpected.

Should failure occur in a PhD thesis defence, all stakeholders lose… it’s not a zero sum game. I would imagine that a traumatic event or experience occurring just prior to the defence would be the most likely causation.

Should a PhD student sees a roadblock up ahead, it could be a mirage, or it could be real.

Regardless if you are at the beginning, in the middle, or at the end of your PhD journey, why risk losing it all?
