Key Thought in this blog – Performance appraisal is one of the most complex areas in management; triggering dread and apprehension among the employees in organizations. Seen from another perspective, performance evaluations are extremely important tools to assess the employees’ effectiveness at work. It scans an individual’s approach towards his work. There are ways in which the employees can actually look forward to their appraisals rather than dreading the whole process.
Appraisal system must be pervasive and dignified. Assessment of quality of work input and capability of each employee in the organization is essential. When there is a feeling of aversion, there is always certain amount of expectations out of the thing.
The Top 10 things that employees expect from their performance appraisal are :
1. 360 degree evaluation
2. Unbiased rating- Employees believe appraisals are often prejudiced based on caste, gender, age, background, personal relations etc.
3. Focus on improvement- How the employee is performing presently and his potential for future, rather than solely focussing on past mistakes.
4. Rewards and recognition- Employees want to know that their rewards and recognition is in line with their workplace performance.
5. Knowledge about the company’s expectations– Employees require adequate information and knowledge about what is expected out of them.
6. Positive attributes- Every employee has some or the other good aspect in him. It is a good idea to inform the employee about his good attributes
7. Healthy criticism- Does not mean insulting or demeaning the employee. It means sharing constructive feedback in a respectful manner.
8. Motivation- Performance appraisal can be a rich source of motivation for the employees. Realising the expectations, their capabilities and self-reforming techniques enables an individual to look forward to positive outcomes.
9. Coaching instead of criticizing.
10. Avoid being exploited- Employees expect the organization to keep the core values and vision in mind before making assessments.
Last but not the least, employees expect performance appraisal to be a continuous process throughout the year and not once a year event !
