What to Pack

What to Pack

I used to overpack for trips. The first few times I went to Vegas for a weekend and had to check a bag. And I would bring a bigger bag than I needed for the all the shopping I was planning to do – that I likely couldn’t afford. Today whenever I have the luxury of going somewhere without my kids, I am a stealth packer only bringing what is absolutely necessary. I’ll basically do whatever it takes to not check a bag if I’m flying. And having kids has only made me more aware of all the stuff in my life.

I’m sure you’ve seen people post things like “Things weren’t working before the pandemic it’s time for a change” or “Let’s not go back to the way we were”. And while there is some truth in that I don’t think we need to abandon our whole way of life post COVID. If you know me you know I care about the planet and any chance I get to tell people to watch Planet of the Humans I will – seriously watch it. Yes, there are some things we are doing as a species that are harmful, damaging and downright awful. And we need to stop, listen to each other, pivot some ways of doing things, and move forward.

But we have to remember too that there are some things that were working. There are things that are beautiful, kind and wonderful and we should most definitely keep doing those things. As we, hopefully, start moving towards the end of this time it’s a great time to think about what to pack for the future.

  • What was working in your life before this all started?
  • What can you leave behind?
  • Where is there an opportunity to expand your point-of-view?

This may seem trivial, but I know I need to stop reading negative comments on social media posts. The worst of people really live in that space and getting tangled up in that web can leave me feeling angry and frustrated. But like packing for a trip sometimes leaving behind something small like an extra pair of shoes or jeans is the difference between gliding past bag check through security to the airport bar for a pre-flight cocktail and having to wait in line and almost miss your flight to check your bag. Clearly, I’m dreaming about flying!

This week’s meditation is 3 minutes and I will guide you through 3 deeps breaths and then leave you to explore staying present.
