What is OTF?

In this day and age, everyone is looking for that something new, that fresh faced idea that the competition hasn’t thought of yet – as long as it doesn’t cost the earth! With Komfi laminators not only do you get a ‘best in class’ thermal laminator you also get an option to add a module that does just this. A simple and elegant solution to foil your products with minimal fuss but with a high quality finish.

‘Over Toner Foiling’ is an option that can be fitted to the Komfi range of thermal laminating machines and is a method of applying a film which creates special effects (glossy, colourful or metallic areas) on the digitally printed sheet. The standard laminator is also provided with a winding up unit, a separation bar and a support sheet metal.

The process operates as follows: the substrate film, with a surface sensitive with respect to the toner, passes through the machine in the same way as with standard lamination. The film adheres to the sheet areas printed with toner while white (i.e. unprinted) areas remain unaffected, even in the event of contact of the film with the processed substrate. The transfer film is wound up on a shaft to complete the process.

Komfi’s extensive range of thermal laminating machines cover format sizes from small to large, with a variety of different production speeds to suit all requirements, and comprise the following models: Junior, Amiga, Delta, Sagitta and Sirius.

UV coating and spot varnishing options are also available with Komfi’s Fullmatic and Spotmatic ranges.

At our recent collaboration at Duplo’s ‘Hands On’ event we showcased the Amiga 52 with the OTF option. We printed our Friedheim business cards, laminated them using soft touch foil and had the Printer re-run the SRA3 sheet through to have our logo printed by toner on-top of the soft touch laminate. At the show we then foiled the SRA3 sheet whereby our logo came out in different foils we had for the demonstrations. Cutting of the SRA3 sheets was done by the Schneider 78 guillotine we had at the show. The result – inexpensive, extremely high quality business cards to be given away to attendees.
