According to the FRD Center research, there are almost 50 metallurgical manufacturers in Romania, with a cumulated turnover of approximately 2.8 bn EUR in 2022. Some of the largest metallurgical manufacturers in Romania are: Liberty Galati, Nimet, Donalam, ArcelorMittal Hunedoara and ASO Cromsteel. In March 2024, the Turkish investment firm Ussuri Capital announced plans to invest almost 1 bn EUR to build a carbon-neutral steel plant in Romania.
Based on official data from the National Institute of Statistics, the metallurgical industry in Romania increased by 10.8% as gross series in the first four months of 2024 compared to the same period of 2023.?
As it results from the FRD Center analysis, there are over 200 companies active in Bulgaria in the metal ore extraction, basic metal production and metal processing equipment manufacturing. The combined operating revenue of the metals, mining and metallurgy sector in Bulgaria reached 9.754 bn EUR in 2022, as it results from a report published by the business intelligence provider SeeNext.
According to ReportLinker, Hungary is ranked 13th in Europe in terms of metal manufacturing revenue in 2023. The metal manufacturing sector in Hungary has expanded since 2013, with an average annual growth rate of 2.8%.
The metallurgical sector in Poland is dominated by privately owned companies and it is based on the production and processing of steel. There are approximately 2,200 metal production companies operating in Poland, based on Statistics Poland data.
According to ReportLinker, Czechia is ranked 9th in the European metal manufacturing market in 2023. The Czech metal manufacturing sector has recorded a rise average of 1.6% each year since 2013.
The iron and steel manufacturing industry in Slovakia registers around 260 businesses, with over 19,000 employees, according to IBISWorld consulting company. The biggest company operating in Slovakia is ArcelorMittal, followed by Voestalpine and Thyssenkrupp Steel Europe.
According to MIP Employment recruitment agency, the total gross metal production in Croatia is estimated at 4.5 million tonnes in 2023. The metallurgical sector employs approximately 25,000 people in 2023, accounting for around 2% of the total employed workforce in Croatia.
According to the Association of Mechanical Engineering and Metalworking Industries of Latvia, the metalworking and mechanical engineering is one of the leading industries in Latvia, providing around 19% of the total manufacturing turnover and 24% of the total exports of goods. By turnover in 2023, the manufacture of fabricated metal products accounts for 40% of the metalworking and mechanical engineering sector in Latvia, while the manufacture of basic metals represents 8%. The metalworking and mechanical engineering industry in Latvia is highly export-oriented, with around 75-80% of the production exported, mainly to EU countries.?

Based on official data from the National Commission for Strategy and Prognosis, the metallurgical industry in Romania is forecasted to record y-o-y increases in gross series of 0.4% in 2024, 1.9% in 2025, 2.6% in 2026 and 2.1% in 2027.
According to ReportLinker, the metal manufacturing revenue in Hungary is forecasted to record 562 mEUR by 2028, compared to approximately 460 mEUR in 2023, with a compound annual growth rate of 3.2%.
