WHAT IS OPENFLOW? HOW IT IS RELATED TO SDN?
OpenFlow concept started back in 2008 at Stanford University. Its newer version was released in 2009. After this many companies came that supported OpenFlow like OpenDayLight.
OpenFlow is the Software-Defined networking Standard. It is referred to as the communication protocol between SDN environments. It allows SDN controllers to communicate with routers and switches (forwarding plane) either physically or virtually to better adapt to changing business needs.
We call SDN Controller the “brain” in SDN. It sends information below (switches and routers) through southbound APIs and above (application and business logic) through northbound APIs.
Nowadays, SDN controllers are more in demand by the organizations so SDN controllers federate between SDN controller domains by OpenFlow and OVSDB.
For OF devices to communicate with SDN Controllers, must follow OpenFlow protocol. The control force changes to flow tables that allow network admins to partition the traffic, optimize performance and configuration testing.
SDN and OpenFlow are the latest demands of time. It is the basic requirement for optimum performance and enhanced networks. To flourish a business or an organization, a basic knowledge of these technologies is a must else it will be a great disadvantage to you.
