What Is Old Is New Again ... and great.
Queensport Nova Scotia - one of the last unexploited real estate markets on the Continent

What Is Old Is New Again ... and great.

In the 1700s when settlers built farms and fishing villages on the Atlantic coast to escape war and poverty in Europe, the land was diverse and rich enough to support large families with cattle, fish, good crops, fruit trees and plenty of natural building materials. This region is as close to New York City as Atlanta, Georgia but shows up on maps as outside the range of an expected EMP blast that could take down most of the infrastructure in North America. One of the strangest things you'll notice is fruit trees along many highways and often in the surrounding forest. Many thousands of apples fall to the ground, to be consumed by deer.?You'll find centuries old rock walls that used to separate farm fields, that have returned to mixed forest - owing to the transition from agriculture to other industries. This region has survived many incarnations of economic activity. But while the closest Walmart is an hour's drive away, a new breed of entrepreneurs are moving in. It could be the California style coastline, or quiet ambiance with a noticeable absence of any aircraft. In Ontario (or many parts of the Eastern US for that matter) you could escape the hustle of Toronto with a 1-acre lakefront cottage (and no privacy), and pay over $5,000 in property taxes on your $800.000 investment. Or you could pick up a compact chalet with ocean views, and privacy with beach front on 40+ acres for under $130,000. Annual taxes here are going to be less than $500/year. These deals still exist in Nova Scotia where Americans and Canadians have been quietly moving in for a few years. But several things may work against you... there are fewer properties available. Many current owners come from local families who go back hundreds of years and they prefer to sell local (privately to people the know - or know of). Some of the best deals will never come to your attention because they aren't accessible on the Internet. You have to go and physically look. You would also do well to look up Del Mar Realty (Canso NS) which owns the listing for this ocean view chalet and ask for Tino Winter or Marta Anderson. For anyone interested in the region, please feel free to contact me directly with questions.?
