In 2023, the Nursing Catalyst team, in partnership with the American Organization for Nursing Leadership (AONL), set out to accurately measure nurse manager span-of-control in a principled way to provide nurse executives tangible data on overall scope of the manager role and the variables disproportionately contributing to overload.??

The national benchmarking survey collected more than 1,700 responses from acute care nurse managers on 20 variables that directly contribute to a burdensome span-of-control, including:??

  • Unit-based variables, such as bed size, patient turnover, and risk management ?
  • People variables, such as headcount, diversity of role, and staff novice-ness?
  • Other variables, such as the number of physician groups, committee participation, and committee leadership

Among its critical findings, The Nursing Catalyst Span-of-Control Tool for Frontline Clinical Leaders surfaced key insights that equip nurse executives with a clear path forward to right size manager span-of-control.???
