Dear friends and colleagues,

What now?"Sustainability vs. instability"—Part 2/3—The Road to Sustainability April 11, 2022

A little more than a year ago, I wrote the successful series "Build a resilient and responsive organization " that led me to launch the Road to Sustainability initiative.

It included three interconnected phases to reach the innovation loop: priorities and perspectives, sustainability and adoption, and performance and outputs.

This special series is the subject of an upcoming playbook that will be released by the summer. But before and for this month, I'd like to explore the feedback from the reality we are witnessing:?the various conflicts around the world, people's strength, and courage over the last month have inspired me to re-investigate the nature of sustainability, resilience, and the confusion we are evolving in.

1.1—Last week's recap in a picture:

Now what?—Part 1/3: Resources vs. resourcefulness: focusing on increasing the system's overall efficiency

Rapidly developing economies are frequently portrayed as sustainability laggards, preoccupied with lifting their citizens out of poverty rather than environmental protection. Their regulatory bodies can be weak, hesitant to impose restrictions on newly liberalized markets, or resentful of pressure from developed countries. On the other hand, the developed world has never had a monopoly on visionaries.

1.2—Preamble: Now what?—Part 2/3:?sustainability vs. instability

“Organizations are those who can profoundly in?uence sustainability adoption through their products and services that span across different locations through their supply chains and markets.”—Yael ?

The progress of value creation towards sustainable development should adopt an appropriate time frame horizon (schedule, plan, ecosystem). The management team in charge should address the short and long-term effects of current human activities and policy decisions and select a proper scope to capture their local and global impact.

Collaboration and engagement with value chain partners, employees, and external stakeholders require creating an iterative procedure that translates life cycle management insights into value creation adoption.?[This is an extract from our “Build a resilient and responsive organization”, playbook, soon to be released].

3.1—[From the archives] Tony Fish and Yael Rozencwajg on plotting COP26 and why the decision of 1.5 degrees is framed

The decisions that have been made during the past editions of the COP have resulted in various paradoxical impacts. Uncertainty and value complexity caused us to dither, delay, and defer when we needed to act. We've forgotten to take care of ourselves and our environments for the last century, and now we need to make compromises.

In this episode, Tony and Yael share their views on the unconnected actions and how they feed our future decisions and outcomes.
