What is Nouveau-Deco?
Art Nouveau, an art and design movement, grew in popularity in the early 20th century. Nouveau depicts natural forms; it draws inspiration from the natural world with motifs like flower stalks and buds, vine tendrils, and insect wings.
At Stonecraft Group , our affinity towards nature is best personified by our Nouveau-esque approach.
Conversely, Art Deco from the 1930s emphasises modernity, symmetry, and a sleek, streamlined aesthetic. It is a response (and a contrast) to the entropy of Art Nouveau by using clear-cut lines to convey an organised aesthetic.
We have incorporated modernity into our experimental projects with the proper utilities.
A Positive Imbalance
A discreet combination of Nouveau-Deco in our work showcases our bias towards nature.
Conscious construction forms the base of our practice; we build around nature rather than on it. Often, we facilitate the amenities and designs naturally available in the environment by constructing just enough to be comfortable to use.

In building with a bias towards nature, we have noticed the irregularities present in the natural world. Imperfection is beautiful, and we are honouring quirks through our design. We are busting the myth of “balance”, whether concrete-green, action-inaction, or built-untouched.
Freeing ourselves of the term “balance”, we are now open to exploring the natural environment without preconceived ideas. Our company ethos has evolved to have a positive imbalance towards nature.
The Way Forward
Art Nouveau and Art Deco represent two distinct art and design styles that signify the relationship between nature and construction. A positive imbalance drives our architectural choices, materials, and design principles, all credit to our Nouveau-Deco approach.
Sometimes, our decisions lean towards Nouveau, some towards Deco, and sometimes neither.
Art Nouveau's natural and organic focus aligns with sustainability and biophilic design, while Art Deco's modern and geometric principles can inspire efficient and technologically advanced construction practices. Both styles encourage us, as builders, to create aesthetically pleasing and environmentally conscious structures.
