What Nigeria Can Learn from the Adopt-A-Healthcare Facility Programme
...and how it can transform its healthcare system!
In healthcare, being innovative and looking ahead is key. In my 3+ years of working in the healthcare industry, I have had the opportunity to lead some big initiatives in how healthcare is delivered, how facilities are built, and how patients are cared for. Today, I want to talk about one of these projects, the Adopt-A-Healthcare Facility Program (ADHFP) , and what it means for business leaders who want to make a difference. In my journey leading initiatives like the ADHFP, I have seen how embracing new ways of delivering healthcare can truly make a difference.
From using the latest tech to involving local communities, innovation is key.
As we move forward, business leaders must keep up with these changes. Working hand in hand and thinking ahead, we can create a healthcare system that works for everyone, ensuring it is fair, equal, and built to last.
In addition to this, there is relatively rapid progress in the healthcare sector, driven by advancements in technology and evolving healthcare delivery models. With a focus on innovation and community engagement, initiatives like the ADHFP are not only improving healthcare outcomes but also strengthening communities and promoting equity in access to quality care. As we continue to embrace these changes, business leaders need to stay informed and adaptable, ensuring that they can effectively navigate the evolving landscape of healthcare and contribute to building a system that works for everyone.
This article will take a deep dive into the transformative impact of the ADHFP on the healthcare sector. We will explore how this program is revolutionizing healthcare delivery, infrastructure development, and patient care, making quality healthcare more accessible to all. Additionally, we will discuss the importance of innovation, community engagement, and collaboration in shaping the future of healthcare, ensuring it is equitable, sustainable, and effective for everyone.
Empowering healthcare transformation through the ADHFP and what we can learn from it
The Adopt-A-Healthcare Facility Programme (ADHFP), led by the Private Sector Health Alliance of Nigeria (PSHAN) , is making significant strides in Nigeria's healthcare sector. This initiative, driven by robust partnerships and community engagement, is transforming healthcare delivery, infrastructure development, and patient care nationwide. Through this program, local communities are empowered to shape their healthcare facilities, ensuring equitable access to quality care, particularly in underserved areas. Additionally, the ADHFP fosters economic growth by creating employment opportunities and involving local businesses. As a key initiative of PSHAN, the ADHFP exemplifies the benefits of collaboration, innovation, and effective leadership. Nigeria has the potential to establish a healthcare system that is equitable and resilient, investing in healthcare infrastructure and prioritizing community engagement, thereby benefiting all citizens. This represents an opportunity for Nigeria to learn from past experiences and chart a course towards a healthier future.
The ADHFP is a big deal. It involves giving communities more control over their healthcare and making lasting improvements.
We are successfully revitalizing primary healthcare centers (PHCs), collaborating with governments, NGOs, and businesses, and ensuring that quality care is more accessible to everyone, especially those in remote or underserved areas.
Here are some examples and case studies to illustrate the impact of the ADHFP:
Model PHC Boji Boji Agbor, Delta State: Before the intervention of the ADHFP, the Boji Boji Agbor PHC faced significant challenges, including inadequate infrastructure, shortage of medical supplies, and limited healthcare services. However, through the ADHFP in partnership with the Delta State government, the facility underwent revitalization efforts, including infrastructure upgrades, provision of essential medical equipment, and capacity building for the healthcare staff.
As a result, the PHC is now more operational, providing a wide range of healthcare services to the local community. Patients have reported improved access to medical care, reduced waiting times, and better health outcomes.
Jumberi PHC, Bauchi State: Similar to many PHCs across Nigeria, the Jumberi PHC struggled with resource constraints and limited capacity to meet the healthcare needs of the community. With support from the ADHFP in partnership with the Bauchi State government, the PHC transformed, receiving investments in infrastructure, medical equipment, and human resources.
Today, the Jumberi PHC serves as a hub for primary healthcare services, offering preventive care, maternal and child health services, and treatment for common ailments. The revitalized facility has witnessed a significant increase in patient visits, indicating improved trust and confidence in the healthcare services provided.
Infrastructure Upgrades in Rivers State: In Rivers State, several PHCs are currently undergoing infrastructure upgrades as part of the ADHFP in partnership with the Adopter, THE HOW FOUNDATION NIGERIA , and the Rivers State government. These upgrades include renovations to existing structures, installation of modern medical equipment, and improvement of sanitation facilities.

The objective is to enhance the quality of healthcare services and create a conducive environment for both patients and healthcare providers. Once completed, these upgraded PHCs are expected to cater to the healthcare needs of local communities more effectively, contributing to improved health outcomes and overall well-being.
Service Provider Engagements in Edo State: In Edo state, the ADHFP in partnership with the Adopter, the Aig-Imoukhuede Foundation , and the Edo State Government is finalizing engagements with service providers to enhance healthcare delivery in the region. This involves partnering with medical professionals, healthcare organizations, and other stakeholders to improve access to quality care and expand service offerings.
The ADHFP aims to leverage its expertise and resources to address healthcare challenges more comprehensively by collaborating with experienced service providers. This initiative is expected to result in better healthcare access, improved patient satisfaction, and increased efficiency in service delivery.
PHC Audits in Kano State: In Kano State, the ADHFP is commencing audits of PHCs in partnership with the Adopter, The Aliko Dangote Foundation, and the Kano state government to assess their current status and identify areas for improvement. These audits involve comprehensive evaluations of infrastructure, human resources, medical equipment, and service delivery processes. The ADHFP aims to identify gaps and bottlenecks in healthcare delivery in the state and develop targeted interventions to address them, by conducting audits. The insights gained from these audits will inform strategic decision-making and resource allocation, ultimately leading to better healthcare outcomes for the people of Kano state.
These examples highlight the tangible impact of the ADHFP in improving primary healthcare delivery across Nigeria, showcasing how collaborative efforts and strategic investments can lead to positive changes in healthcare access and quality.
Strategies for Equitable Access, Efficiency, and Community Support, and how to replicate these strategies across the country
This is instructive for Nigeria as it navigates its healthcare landscape.
With a focus on improving access to quality care, enhancing infrastructure, and prioritizing community involvement, Nigeria can further support and implement the ADHFP to drive positive change in its healthcare system.
Nigeria can work towards creating a healthcare system that is equitable, sustainable, and effective for all its citizens, learning from the experiences of others and leveraging innovative solutions.
Finally, let’s look at Nigeria again in the context of healthcare innovation, and how programs like ADHFP are paving the way for a brighter future in healthcare by focusing on improving access to quality care, enhancing infrastructure, and prioritizing community involvement. Delving into the successes and challenges faced in implementing such initiatives and exploring the lessons learned that can be applied to healthcare systems globally.
Nigeria should be investing in its healthcare infrastructure and community engagement efforts. Nigeria can ensure that its citizens receive the care they need, by allocating resources to improve the quality and accessibility of healthcare facilities. Additionally, prioritizing community involvement and collaboration will empower residents and organizations to play an active role in shaping the healthcare system. This investment in healthcare will not only lead to better health outcomes for Nigerians but also contribute to the overall development and prosperity of the nation.
Reflecting on the progress we have achieved in healthcare, I am optimistic about the future. We are making strides toward improving healthcare for all, collaborating, utilizing data wisely, and prioritizing people. We should continue moving forward, step by step, towards a healthier tomorrow.
So where does that leave Nigeria?
This presents an opportunity for Nigeria to learn from these experiences and support/implement the ADHFP in a way that is further tailored to its healthcare landscape. Nigeria can pave the way for a brighter future in healthcare, focusing on improving access to quality care, enhancing infrastructure, and prioritizing community engagement.
Embracing innovation and collaboration, Nigeria has the potential to create a healthcare system that is equitable, sustainable, and effective for all its citizens.
