What Negative Thinking Really Means
Tracey Gazel
?? I help leaders improve mental clarity and focus, sleep better, feel calmer with less stress, be present at home and enjoy life more.
These past two weeks I have been sick with bronchitis.
I’m starting to notice something every time I get a virus or a cold –
The content of my thinking becomes more negative.
So not only am I not feeling well but it also looks to me like the world becomes a much harder place to live in.
This is because we are all living in the feeling of our thinking.
Think of your thoughts like a window that you see through.
If you are having a lot of negative, heavy, or anxious thoughts, the window is very dirty and smudged and it is hard to see through it clearly.
But if your thoughts are light and clear, the window is clean, and it is easy to see the world clearly on the other side.
In my case, I am noticing when I am not feeling well or when I get tired or run down, the window is dirty and my thoughts start to loop through negative thinking patterns.
It seems harder to get into a good feeling where I am peaceful and content in the present moment.
But now that I am noticing a pattern, I can pull myself out of it.
I can remind myself that my thoughts are not a reflection of the world and everything external to me. My thoughts are a reflection of what’s happening inside me because they come from within me.
And the fact that I’m noticing more negative thoughts and am finding it harder to feel peaceful and content is not a big deal.
Because I know it’s temporary.
With me not feeling well, my thoughts are creating a ‘dirtier window’ making it harder to see the present moment clearly.
But the dirt is temporary.
And the more that I just allow myself to not feel well, and rest, rather than be annoyed and push against it, the more quickly I’ll “clean my window” and will bounce back to my natural state of calm, clear, content, and peaceful.
Because the real me is the one who has been quietly noticing these patterns all along.
I don’t need to get swept into the drama of the crazy person in my head!

She’s just letting me know I’m not feeling well. And that’s ok.
What negative thinking really means, then, is a reflection of our current state-of-mind.
It is just neutral information, similar to data, letting us know we strayed from our baseline state of calm, clear, content and peaceful.
And the more we allow negative thinking to be there simply as information, and then prioritize taking care of ourselves, the more quickly we bounce back to our True Nature.
It’s just a detour.
You (and I) have got this!
