What is my WHY…?
Previously I published a short post explaining that inner motivation is far more powerful than external motivation such as money, fame or power etc. Just to be clear, these external factors ARE powerful attractions but without inner motivation (ie WHY you do or want something) the motivational pull these external factors will have, will fade.
Setting up my own recruitment consultancy was to do business the way I want. It was to make a positive impact on people’s lives with the right roles and to really help clients move forward with the right people. I am and always will be, people focused and that’s why my motto is Putting People First. That’s what a recruiter should be focused on when you are dealing with one - someone who really is trying to advise but letting you make the call!
Moving jobs is a big decision but it should bring a lot of positives. Since the beginning of the pandemic, there have been many challenges in society and the economy for employers to think about when trying to retain or attract talent. I’m sure we have all heard of the great resignation. More and more people have decided it’s time for a change. In addition, companies have had to adapt in many ways to help answer the question, “How can we help our employees with the challenges they and we face?” Such measures over the past 2 years have included;
Fully remote working
Hybrid working
Early promotions
Increased salaries
Moving to a 4 or 4.5 day working week, with or without a drop in pay

One off bonuses
It’s great that companies are looking after their colleagues and the above will have a real positive impact on the lives of people. That’s great isn’t it!?
It is. But, going back to my initial point, do these external factors, answer your WHY?, or not? Ask yourself why you might have been thinking about a change to start off with or why you became interested in an opportunity. Does it offer something that aligns to your WHY and is it different than what your current role or organisation can offer? Some examples i have heard have been;
"I want more autonomy in my job so I can help shape things the way I want"
"It's important to me that I can be proud about the work I do"
"I want to progress as quickly as possible because I have people dependent on me in my wider family"
etc.
External motivators often distract so just remember to take time to sit, think and ask yourself, what is my WHY?
