What my dog is trying to teach me.

Every day we wake up with a plan - whether it's to tackle a project, attend a meeting, or simply catch up on emails. We get caught up in the hustle and bustle of the day-to-day, focusing on tasks and responsibilities that seem so important in the moment. But sometimes, it takes a furry friend to remind us of the truly important things in life.

Recently, I found my dog, Riley, lying on a freshly washed (and warm) stack of sheets I was about to put onto our bed. My inital reaction was I'll have to wash these again - but as I looked at her, I realized just how much she's taught me about relaxing a little in the four years we've been together. Here are just a few of the lessons I've learned from her:

  • Live in the moment: Dogs are experts in living in the present. They remind us to enjoy the simple things in life and not to dwell on the past or worry about the future. I do both often.
  • Loyalty: Dogs are fiercely loyal creatures. They teach us the importance of standing by our loved ones through thick and thin.
  • Forgiveness: Dogs have an amazing capacity for forgiveness. No matter how many times we may accidentally step on their paw or forget to take them for a walk, they always forgive us and greet us with wagging tails.
  • Compassion: Dogs are incredibly empathetic creatures. They can sense when their humans are sad or upset and offer comfort in their own unique way. They teach us to be more compassionate and caring towards others.
  • Routine and Discipline: Dogs thrive on routine and discipline. They teach us the importance of structure and consistency in our daily lives. I'm good at this one - so this comes easy!
  • Happiness and Playfulness: Dogs have an infectious enthusiasm for life. They teach us to find joy in the little things and to embrace our playful side. She's really good at making me laugh at the most unexpected times.

Life can be hectic, but it's important to take a step back and remember what truly matters. Thanks to Riley, I'm learning to live a more fulfilling life - both at work and at home.
