What is my day like as an NHS GP?

What is my day like as an NHS GP?

Often I reflect back on my very busy days at work and can't quite believe the number of patients that I am in contact with and the huge variety of conditions I see. One thing that can be said for general practice - it is never dull!

These are some of the conditions that I saw in just one day last week:

  • Heart failure and breathlessness
  • Urinary tract infection x 2
  • Menopause and HRT x 3
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Hypertension and medication changes x 3
  • Family member died by suicide
  • Chest pain
  • Stress
  • Abdominal hernia
  • Skin Cancer check x 2
  • Mirena Coil insertion
  • Contraceptive implant replacement
  • Chest infections x 3
  • Cough x 2
  • Parkinson's disease review
  • Sleep Apnoea
  • Unwell children x 4
  • Rash all over body
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Rectal Bleeding - suspected colon cancer
  • Chronic all over body pain
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Firearm certificate
  • Insurance forms x 4
  • Visit x2 - for end of life care and a dementia review
  • QOF - chronic disease management for heart disease and strokes

As GPs, our expertise is to be generalists - to expect anything through the door and be able to triage, diagnose, treat, signpost and refer. Nothing prepares me for having to comfort a patient who's family member has died from suicide and then having to go straight on to see the next patient with chest pain.

So it's 8am monday morning and it all starts again...
