What mountains can teach us about being seen in the press
Carrie Eddins
Helping heart -based, soul-led business owners become recognised leading voices in the world by being in the press using an intuitive, heart-based and energetic approach
" Ok, you know how I live at the bottom of the mountain?"
They all nodded.
" And to avoid even more menopausal weight attaching itself to me, in unwanted places you remember me mentioning that I have been climbing bit by bit this mountain? " said Doubting Debbie slowly becoming more daring in her credibility pants and bra ( aka Debbie Jenkins )
" Well, it occurred to me there are a few lessons that mountains can teach us about being press" She declared in full lecture mode to her gang.
"You have got me intrigued now Debs,' said a curious Random Reena ( aka Susannah Simmons ) as she leaned right in and stopped her secret and subtle scrolling.
" Me too, as I know I have a few blocks about this, even though I don't really admit them to myself too much!! " said a vulnerable and yet truthful Fabulous Felicity ( aka Lucy Hall )
" Not me, honestly, I don't know why I attend these calls, as I have no issues whatsoever with being seen in the press, that's why they regularly reach out to me for comments, and my media page is rammed! " stated a supremely confident Nina the Narcissist. ( whose identity remains a secret)
" Well, then maybe don't turn up then Nina if you know so much and are doing so well? " said a loving but firm Spiritual Sue ( aka Karen Bashford )
" I would have FOMO." quipped Nina
" Well, that's a whole other issue entirely," said Debbie with a huge grin on her face, whilst noticing a few other smirks on the screen.
" Let's get going then shall we? " she gently expressed.
" Grab your notebooks or activate your Zoom transcription bots as you are really going to want to get this information as honestly, it shifted something in me, big time!! And you all know I am rather addicted to learning!! " She giggled
" We really do, we cannot keep up! ,' laughed Random Reena.
To get up a mountain, you have to know how to deal with it, it's not your average road, it's often mega high with special altitude so you need to prepare to go up or you might get injured or fall off and even get killed!
Whilst you might not get 'injured or get killed,' going into the press, it's not your average form of marketing or raising awareness of you and your businesses, so it requires a bit of extra thought.
You need to ensure you know before you attempt to go into the media how to deal with it, as otherwise it could go horribly wrong, maybe not quite like some politicians or celebrities but...
Plenty of prior preparation prevents p**s poor performance
This was what I learned at school, which still holds true today whether you are walking up a mountain or wanting to go into the press.
Knowing how the press works, is really something that until I started working more closely with our Cheerleading PR team I did not appreciate.
Back in the 1990s...
In my heyday, getting into the press was far easier as it was before social media, so there was far less competition, and noise. And even though there was less access to them, it was still much easier for me and our marketing agency to get media coverage, so much easier!
Nowadays you need to appreciate that it's their agenda, their timing, and their decision if it happens or not unlike with marketing.
I know many of you have books out or coming out but you have to see how you can tie it to something happening right now or this year, as otherwise why would they be interested? As what is in it for them. ( marketing 101 right?!)
Maps help a LOT both digital and paper!
I know we all want to be digitally connected on our phones every step of the way as we go up a mountain, but truth be told, the higher you go, the less wifi connection you are likely to have!!
Yes, your camera might work, see Our Cheerleading's photo here( see photo above ) of one of them going up Snowdown last week; but would you be able to check your important emails or make a call? Maybe, maybe not!!!
Would you be able to read the digital route planner, or read a printed map?
What if it was foggy? What if the printed map flew out of your hands because of the wind?
When you are looking to go into the press, it is important to have a map of where you want to go and be seen as otherwise you could waste a lot of time and energy doing not much at all.
Your Press 'map,' will provide you with more details about where you looking to go into the press, so that you can focus your precious time and energy and not waste it.
The easiest way to get started according to our Cheerleading PR Team with t his is to ask your current clients what media they consume. Then to make a list of these and start nurturing relationships with journalists who write for these media outlets.
If that is not easy to discover then they suggest that you find at least one or two people in your industry who has a profile that you desire and look at where they have been featured and start to nurture your relationships with the journalists from these places.
" That sounds so obvious, and yet it had not even occurred to me; especially the last suggestion,' shared Fabulous Felicity openly.
And finally shared Daring Debbie with her 'credibilty pants' now well and truly pulled up...
"Do you know what really stops any of you following through on all of this properly myself included? " said a pensive Debbie.
" Tell me more! " said a seriously curious Random Reena.
" You do! You stop yourself!
You are each your own biggest mountain, and you need to do the inner work to climb your own inner mountain! " she said passionately.
" Yup very true, it took me ages to realise I had been holding myself back last year that's why I have stepped up working with our Cheerleading PR team this year. " said Random Reena gently.
" Well, last month they gave me some game-changer journal prompts about this which have started to shift something in me, because I know I am STILL bleep holding myself back and I am so bleep at myself for this. " voiced Debbie.
" Can you share some of these Debbie as it would really help and I love a good journal prompt?" asked Spiritual Sue with a big smile on her face.
" Of course, here's a couple and then by all means reach out to our Cheerleading PR team who are bringing out a journal full of wonderful prompts to help support us all with this, exciting right? " Enthused Debbie
" So exciting! " said a gleeful Random Reena!

Drumroll please, said Debbie rather dramatically.
" What is the cost of you not going into the press in 2024? "
" What do you fear about getting the press coverage that you truly desire?"
" How areyour self-judgements and negative emotions consciously and even unconsciously holding you back from even giving it a go or investing properly in it? "
" Ooh they are juicey,' said a delighted Fabulous Felicity.
My pleasure, and now ladies I really need the loo before my next call!
It's been a joy as always see you all in the Whatsapp group!
They all chorused 'bye,' with ear to ear smiles as always!

5 个月Preparation is everything Carrie! Love this analogy.. we might not be able to predict everything like when an opportunity might present itself much like the weather... we can at least prepare so we can respond swiftly and appropriately with distinctly more ease than of we had no map at all. Love how you have creating ready made knapsacks filled with the relevant tools, pending your level of experience. ??
Preparation for climbing the mountain or for getting in a magazine or newspaper, is certinly worth it.
