What Is the Most Important Skill You Can Acquire?

When Warren Buffett was asked how the average person could protect themselves from rising inflation he responded by saying,

“The best protection against inflation is your own personal earning power…No one can take your talent away from you.”

That begs the question…

What is the most important skill you can acquire?

It’s not as easy to answer as you might think.

Humans are a diverse species. Diverse in IQ, in interests, and in raw talent.

There are things you are naturally gifted at and things you excel at because you’ve spent years doing them.

Most things we learn in life add little to our earning power.

You can spend years learning the yo-yo. And while you might impress people at parties the skill has little economic utility.

Other things we learn could have huge economic potential if they’re applied in the right area.

If you become an expert in ancient history but choose to become a high school history teacher the economic benefit of that knowledge will be minimal.

But if you turn that knowledge into an entertaining podcast like Dan Carlin’s Hardcore History it has massive economic potential.

See what I mean?

But there is one skill that I believe transcends IQ, interest, talent, and economic application.

It is the most important skill anyone can acquire because it is essential for success in every endeavor.

It’s also a skill that anyone can master.

That skill is communication.

The better you become at communicating your knowledge, skills, ideas and values - the more money you will make.

That’s why I say,

“The most valuable skill anyone can acquire is the ability to effectively communicate their value to others.”

It’s a skill that transfers across all industries and applications.

You can look at any industry:

Jordan Peterson - Psychology and Political Science

Dave Ramsey - Personal Finance

Mel Robbins - Self-Help

Andrew Huberman - Neurobiology

Ryan Holiday - Philosophy

They were all average people at one time.

You could even argue (correctly) that they aren’t the most knowledgeable or skilled people in their area of expertise.

But each of them has been able to maximize their earning power by becoming exceptional communicators.

In the military, we call this a “force multiplier”.

Yet most people treat communication as a supplemental skill rather than an essential one.

That’s something that I want to change.

Earlier this year I held the first Influential Writers Intensive.

A month-long cohort to teach people the skills needed to become expert communicators.

It was the most popular and successful cohort I’ve ever run. (And I’ve been doing this 15 years)

The next intensive is happening October 2nd - 30th.

This will be the last time you can attend the intensive this year.

If you’re looking to:

  • Grow your brand…
  • Improve your communication skills…
  • Sell more, at higher prices, with less resistance…
  • Start a newsletter…
  • Create more engaging content for social media…
  • Build a deep and lasting bond with your clients…
  • Raise awareness for a cause…

Or just improve your skills as a writer.

Then this is for you.

Join the waitlist here:

This is a very interactive cohort and I cap attendance at 25.

Those on the waitlist will be given the first opportunity at those 25 seats.

So make sure you join the waitlist now.

Until tomorrow,

Jason

I learned a lot from Jason's Influential Writers Intensive earlier this year! It was a great course, and I highly recommend it.
