What is the most impactful ROI of training in the workplace? The answer is not what you think.

What is the most impactful ROI of training in the workplace? The answer is not what you think.

How would you answer this question?

Some of the top answers when it comes to training ROI include increased production, better efficiencies, less mistakes, less turnover... etc.

Now those are all good topics which I will eventually cover in future newsletters. But there is one metric that I believe absolutely crushes all the the others when it comes to the greatest impact in your business.

What's your guess? For Today's lesson, we are going to focus on:

Increased Self-Worth.

There is an absolutely staggering statistic that I saw today. ?it’s estimated that roughly 85% of people worldwide (adults and adolescents) have low self-esteem.

Lets start with some definitions of self-worth and self-esteem (these two terms are similiar):

  1. Confidence in one's own worth or abilities.
  2. A sense of one's own value as a human being.
  3. The value you give to your life and achievements.
  4. The feeling that you are important or good.

If you are like me, just reading these definitions gives me the chills. With pure honesty and transparency, I can say there were many moments in my life where I fell into that 85% group of people that have low self-esteem.

Now what about the 15%? What are they doing differently? How do they have higher confidence? How do they value themselves better? Why do they have high self esteem?

We all have hidden skills, abilities and talents that have been repressed due to of all sorts of factors.... which is why it is estimated that 85% of people have low self-esteem. We accept a role within a company, and maybe we don't have every single skill set needed to complete the job exceptionally well. We get called out on our errors and that low self-esteem continues to perpetuate itself. Many will fake it and try to still show up confident to work every day. Meanwhile, on the inside, they are stressed, have anxiety , and are just going through the motions. If you read one of my previous newsletters, you see that anxiety can be caused by a mismatch of the persons skill level and challenge of the work.

Now what about the 15%? What are they doing differently? How do they have higher confidence? How do they value themselves better? Why do they have high self esteem?

Peak performers are practicing and honing their skills, abilities, and talents every day. Self-worth grows when we see we are a little bit better than we were the day before. And the best way to do that is to build a daily habit of training.

I'm not even sure I can put a percentage number on the ROI of helping your employees increase their self worth. Imagine the impact of a confident, skilled, and happy team member that continues to get better and better every day. That, my friend, smokes all other ROI metrics.

Today's Action step:

  1. Self Reflection. Take a moment and look through the times of your life when you've taken yourself from a lower self-worth to a higher self-worth. How did you do it? What were the results? Did it happen overnight or did it take effort over time?
  2. Peer Reflection. Think about the people you work with. Are there any actions you can take to help them practice and hone their skills, abilities, and talents.... which will ultimately increase their self-worth? (Hint: Inspiring your team to build a daily training habit is a great start!)

I'll expand on this topic in future newsletters. Thank you for taking a moment to read through this article, I really do appreciate your time and thoughtfulness. I promise never to sell you anything in this newsletter- my intentions are to provide awesome content that helps you inspire growth and learning in the workplace. All I ask is for you to take action and the ideas and share this newsletter with people who may find value!

Once again you nailed it. 85% is an alarming number of people that have concerns with self-worth. One could imagine if the statistical numbers were reversed.

Excellent view deep into our self. Worth to introspect WITHIN and find out how to value self. Love it.
