“Moment” What does it mean? How does it feel? Where do you find it? How do you get there? Why is the moment important?
The definition of Moment according to Webster's Dictionary is “a very brief period of time.” That’s it. Our lives are nothing more than a string of moments, brief periods of time often called “Now”. If we want to be at our best, it is best to know and develop a relationship to yourself in the moment. When that relationship is on good terms, its known as “being present.”.
Why is it important to be present? When we are in the moment we open ourselves to “the field of all possibilities.” How does this happen? When we are no longer trapped in our heads and all its thoughts, we are capable of going beyond the confines of our past or future thinking. We become aware of: new solutions to problems, what we are truly capable of, how we are showing up, and what is getting in the way of being our best selves in the only time it ever is - now!
Also, we have the opportunity to be intentional and responsive to the world around us instead of reactive and habitual. Finding, knowing and being in the moment allows us to make a choice about how we want to best-use the time available to us.
Through a holistic awareness of these things, we can make better choices to serve how we want to be in the moment; how we (eventually) want to be in every moment.
How do we get away from ourselves and into the Moments? When we identify ourselves only through our minds, we can become trapped in cycles of thinking and feelings. Locked in our heads with an old, outdated piece of software, limited by what’s known, the data from the past, our habits. Often leaving us feeling of frustrated, bored, indecisiveness, guilty, ashamed, anxious and regretful.
How do we update our software? Meditation is obviously a great practice for getting you out of your head and into the moment, as well as any practice of linked breathing-and-movement, like Qigong or Yoga. Breathing practices by themselves are also great because breathing is always in The Moment.
The choice is yours. Start somewhere. Find your moments and continually develop a relationship and a pathway to them.
