What is Mold?

Mold is a fungus that grows well in warm, humid conditions. It spreads as microscopic spores that drift through the atmosphere and land on different surfaces.

These spores proliferate and create small mold colonies when they locate favourable conditions. Although mold may grow outside as well as indoors, it becomes an issue when it does so inside of our homes, businesses, and other structures.

Although there are thousands of varieties of mold, Cladosporium, Penicillium, Aspergillus, and Stachybotrys—also referred to as black mold—are the most prevalent forms found indoors. Some molds, like black mold, can create mycotoxins, which are extremely poisonous substances that can have a serious negative impact on human health, in addition to other allergies and irritants.

Where is Mold Found?

Mold thrives in damp and humid environments, especially where sunlight is lacking. Some of these places happen to be:

  • Bathrooms: Particularly in showers, bathtubs, and sinks.
  • Kitchens: Under sinks, in refrigerators, and on windowsills.
  • Basements and Attics: Due to high humidity and poor ventilation.
  • HVAC Systems: Air conditioning units and ducts can harbor mold spores.
  • Water-Damaged Areas: Anywhere that has experienced water damage, such as after floods or leaks.

Tech-folks, watch out!

There's a direct connection between electromagnetic fields (EMF) and the growth of mold.

Electronic device electromagnetic fields (EMFs) have the ability to intensify the growth of mold, making it more difficult to manage especially in our technologically advanced surroundings and workspaces.

Why is Mold Harmful to the Human Body?

Mold spores can cause a number of health problems when they are swallowed, inhaled, or come into touch with the skin. The kind of mold, the extent of exposure, and the sensitivity of the person all affect how serious these problems are.

The way they affect our health:

  1. Allergic Reactions like sneezing, runny nose, red eyes, and skin rash are some of the symptoms that mold exposure might mimic.
  2. Mold can irritate the airways, resulting in symptoms such as wheezing, coughing, and dyspnea. Severe instances may make asthma and other long-term respiratory disorders like Bronchitis, worse.
  3. Extended exposure to mold can impair immunity, increasing the body's vulnerability to diseases and infection.
  4. Mycotoxins can cause symptoms like headaches, memory loss, and cognitive dysfunction.

Andra S. , a distinguished Naturopath, specialising in Mold, talks about the "weird" other symptoms it can have like:

  • Temperature and Humidity Intolerance: Individuals with mold toxicity often have difficulty regulating their body temperature and may feel excessively hot or cold.
  • Chronic Static Shocks: People affected by mold toxicity may experience frequent static shocks, likely due to the impact on the body’s electrical system.
  • Sensitivity to Light and Smells: Mold toxicity can make you extremely sensitive to bright lights and strong smells.
  • Frequent Urination: An overactive bladder can be a surprising symptom of mold exposure.
  • Reactions to Supplements: Individuals with mold toxicity may have adverse reactions to even basic supplements.
  • Insomnia: Mold toxicity can disrupt sleep patterns, leading to chronic insomnia and poor sleep quality.

If you or someone you know is experiencing any of these symptoms, especially if they are chronic or unexplained, please get in touch with a health practitioner.

As a functional nutritionist, I can help you understand and manage mold toxicity. If you would like to talk to me about the same, do DM me for a casual discussion.
