What is moiré?

Moiré patterns occur when two sets of fine lines or dots, often found in digital screens, overlap at certain angles or when they have slightly different sizes. These patterns can create a visually disruptive experience, as the interference between the two sets of lines can produce a third pattern that is not actually present. This can make text or images on screens appear wavy, blurry, or distorted, leading to difficulty in reading or interpreting the displayed content. Understanding and mitigating moiré patterns is crucial for screen design to ensure clear and comfortable viewing experiences.

What can we do about it?

To mitigate moiré patterns, it's important to adjust the screen resolution or the image resolution so that the pixel grid aligns more harmoniously. This can be done by changing the distance between the screen and the image or by altering the angle of viewing. Additionally, applying a filter or algorithm that blurs or shifts one set of lines slightly can help to reduce the interference pattern. Screen manufacturers often incorporate anti-aliasing techniques and carefully calibrate pixel layouts to prevent moiré patterns from occurring in the first place.
