What is Mobile Device Management?

In this article, we will explore the risks of the current mobile landscape and the benefits of Mobile Device Management (MDM).

Let's dive into Mobile Device Management

But first, what is the current mobile landscape?

Almost every employee uses a mobile device (phone, tablet or laptop) to complete their job. Sometimes, these mobile devices are issued by the employer, and other times, these are bring-your-own-devices (BYOD).

What are the risks associated with accessing company data on a mobile device?

When employees access company data (text messages, emails, videos, contact information, or even photos and videos) on a mobile device, you are at risk of not protecting that data. If an employee exits your organisation and takes their BYOD with them, or more concerningly, loses their BYOD, then your company data is at risk of a cyber-attack.

With cyber-attacks becoming more frequent and sophisticated, businesses must ensure that their data protection systems are as robust as possible.

So, how can we help? Introducing MDM

MDM is the ability to apply security and controls to employee mobile devices, whether BYOD or company-issued. MDM setting can be applied to individuals, groups, or company-wide.

The benefits of MDM

  • You can wipe or lock applications with company data if the mobile device is lost, or stolen, or the employee leaves your organisation.
  • You can force biometric login, which means certain apps require a password, pin code or Face ID to enter. This means that if the employee's phone is lost or stolen, people may be able to access the phone, but not apps with data linked to your organisation.
  • You can containerise the apps relevant to your organisation so that the other apps on the device can't access information stored on the entire device, i.e. you can't copy and paste from your emails into your notes or contacts app.

Summary

We highly recommend implementing a MDM policy into your business if you staff are using mobile devices to complete their job functions.
