A mixed message refers to a form of communication where the conveyed information or signals are contradictory or inconsistent, making it difficult for the receiver to interpret the intended meaning.
It occurs when verbal and non-verbal cues, explicit statements, or actions send conflicting or confusing messages - incongruence. The conflicting elements may involve tone of voice, facial expressions, body language, or explicit statements that contradict underlying attitudes or behaviours.
Mixed messages can create confusion and uncertainty, as the recipient may struggle to determine the true intentions or meaning behind the communication. This can lead to misunderstandings, strained relationships, or ineffective communication overall.
For example, if someone says they are happy for you but their facial expression and tone of voice suggest otherwise, it can create doubt about their sincerity. Similarly, if someone frequently cancels plans but insists that they value the relationship, their actions may contradict their words, resulting in mixed messages.
It's important to consider the context and individual circumstances when interpreting mixed messages, as different people may have varying communication styles or unintentionally send conflicting signals.
Clarity of communication is when the words, tone and body language match - congruence.
