What is 'mindset'? anyway?
The question that made me think

What is 'mindset' anyway?

Recently someone asked me a very important question 'What is Mindset anyway?'

That question really made me sit up. I realised that I make assumptions when I describe myself as 'The Mindset Designer'. Assumption one is that people know what I mean by 'mindset' and assumption two that they understand what I mean by 'designing' a mindset.

So what is mindset? ??

For me the word mindset means how we bring together our thoughts, feelings, beliefs and values to make sense of the world and ourselves. Your mindset has a crucial influence on how you behave and the decisions you make in any given situation. Mindset plays a pivotal role in achievement and success; in our day to day experience of life and in how we cope with challenge and change.

I start from the premise that your mindset creates your reality. How does that work? ??

Suppose you hold a belief that it is too late for you to change direction in your career, despite not being very happy in your work. An opportunity is presented which offers you the chance to move into a different field that you are really interested in. Your thoughts and feelings reflect your belief;

'I'm too old to start something new' 'They wouldn't consider me at my age'

'I wouldn't fit in' ' I'm better off staying with what I know'

So you choose not to explore the opportunity. Your mindset limits your potential, your choices and future life experience.

Your mindset is the product of your past life experience- which means it is all learnt. And that means it isn't fixed. You can retrain your mind.

This is where design comes in. ??

For most of our early lives we are not aware of how we are learning - it's just happening very rapidly in multiple areas. As we get older we make more conscious choices where to focus our attention and what we want to learn- we specialise.

This consciousness of learning tends to be in terms of skills related to our careers and hobbies but is often less present with our attitudes and beliefs. These continue to evolve but the choices we make as we move on effectively 'design' our life experience and increasingly start to define it.

But what if the life experience you've designed is not working? ??

20 years ago that is exactly where I was- living a life that didn't fit who I had become, with a mindset that told me it was too late to change. It took some very dramatic events (which would make a great novel!) to wake me up to the possibility of changing the fundamental beliefs and attitudes that had shaped my experience and taking the leap into creating a new life for myself. That was the start of my coaching career.

Your mindset IS under your control. ??

Because of my own life experience I am now deeply passionate about helping people recognise where and how their life designs aren't working, helping them discover what they really want to do, have and be, then shifting the blocks and barriers that are getting in the way of their success and happiness. I help people design and build their futures.

The choice is there and I don't believe there is a 'too late'. The mind is flexible and has huge capacity for change and growth.

Don't waste it. ??

Fantasticly clear explanation of mindset design Jenni. Thank you for taking the time to write this inspirational article. I love the ‘it’s never too late’ mindset. I’ve changed careers several times, and had those doubts each time. It took me a while to overcome them, and if I’d had someone like you helping me, I would’ve made the changes faster, rather than stay stuck in jobs I didn’t love any more, out of fear. I love the work you are doing!

Great article. I’m in the middle of watching Chris Helmsworth series called Limitless. It’s very much about mindset and demonstrates that it’s like a muscle. Use it and train it a certain way and the possibilities are endless.

Great article, Jenni, we’re all held back by limiting beliefs sometimes which can mean that we miss opportunities. There is nearly nothing that is more powerful than the internal messaging we give ourselves - that power can be used for good
