What mile marker are you at? ???♀?
The versatile wisdom of "it's a marathon, not a sprint"

What mile marker are you at? ??♀?

Hi Friends,

Sunday was the most incredible day of the year in NYC: Marathon Sunday! For those who have never been to the city on Marathon day - it’s something special. The energy, the overwhelming support, and the reinvigorated faith in humanity, even just for a few hours, is hard to describe but I’ll try and analogize anyway.

Every year on the first Sunday in November, fifty thousand people from all over the world gather in Staten Island (yes, really) to compete in a race that traverses all five boroughs of New York City. Living just two blocks from the Mile 18 marker, I make a point of celebrating the many types of people who race the same route throughout the day. Yesterday, my dog, Noodle, and I caught the wheelchair racers and elite women’s runners on our long morning walk down 1st Avenue. My husband and I gathered at a local pub to wait for our close friend Jack in the early afternoon who we then followed to Mile 24 and the Finish Line. We ended the day at a favorite downtown bar celebrating a few friends’ finish and ultimately, delaying this newsletter to a Monday AM send.

From the handicapped to the professional athletes and every type of person in between, the NYC marathon is a great equalizer. With the majority of the spots to race available via open registration and a lottery system - almost anyone can compete without the barrier of achieving a certain qualifying time.

And, unsurprisingly, as I screamed the names of friends, celebrities, and strangers running the race - it dawned on me that the process of running this marathon is akin to getting a new job in this market. Those that are most successful are determined and consistent, have the proper training schedule & preparation, a vast support network, and intrinsic belief in themselves knowing that the journey won’t be short and won’t be easy.

For my job seekers, whether you’ve been racing for a while now or you’re just starting to think about your training plan, a coaching session will be your ultimate accelerator .

There are just 5 working weeks left in 2023 that hiring processes will move forward with active application review, interview traction, etc. so…..

this week only, I’m offering 50-minute strategy sessions for new clients to use however you’d like (job search audit, real-time resume feedback, LinkedIn profile optimization, interview prep, etc.) for the absolute lowest price I’ll ever offer - just $72. With this session , you’ll have a chance to define your goals and questions before the session so that we focus on what’s important and I’ll follow up with detailed next steps and relevant resources based on our discussion.

Clarify ??

As one of my favorite Marathon signs said yesterday, “What are you running from?” Or, in the case of a job search, a more positive and less facetious version would be “What are you running towards?”

In this final stretch of 2023 - it’s critical to know your why. I’ve talked a lot about and led hundreds of you through my role criteria clarity exercise - identifying your Must Haves, Nice-to-Haves, and Red Flags at the start of your search.

Connect ??

For those who have friends & family in the job search race, don’t just meet them at the finish line with a congratulatory text or LinkedIn comment - support them throughout their training. This means not only cheering them on from the sidelines on race day but checking in during those hard training periods: the long runs where there haven’t been any interviews scheduled in weeks or they almost got the medal but someone else inched in front of them to get the offer in the final round.

Instead of asking the surface level “How’s the job search going?” that forces many to turn on the fake smiles and inauthentic answers, ask more thoughtfully, “Is there anything I can do to support you?” or “I imagine your life is very up and down right now with so much time focused on finding your next opportunity - I’m here to talk if you ever just want to vent.”

Be a person that your job searcher friends can lean on for support and someone who can recommend incredible resources that actually help. I challenge you to share the Jumpstart Job Board with at least one person - this board is personally curated and updated weekly with roles that fit ALL of the value-based criteria below:

?? fair & transparently compensation

?? allows for flexible work (fully remote or hybrid)

??? generous benefits

??? contributes to a growing organization

??? sponsored by a connection of mine that I trust

Confidently Communicate ???

My favorite part of the NYC Marathon and likely the only thing that would make me even consider running it is how many runners put their names on their shirts to encourage the tens of thousands of spectators they’ll see on the course to scream their name with cheers of encouragement. You get to be a rockstar for a few hours!

Be the rockstar of your job search & put your name on your shirt:

  • Put the green open-to-work banner up on LinkedIn
  • Make a thoughtful, authentic & positive Linked-In post declaring what you’re looking for
  • Tell everyone you know what you’re looking for - speak your search and role into existence

At the end of the night last night, my friend who finished his first marathon yesterday well under his goal time told me, “I really should have put my name on my shirt.” He’s a low-key guy, he didn’t wear his medal or bright orange race poncho post race but even he wishes he had brought that attention to himself because he thinks it would have pushed him even further, perhaps even gotten him a better time and just would have been a better experience.

It’s not, as the kids are saying, “pick-me” behavior - it’s declaring what you’re looking for and asking for the support you deserve.

Until next Week,

Jess Storiale
