What it Means to Work in the Disability Sector: A Glimpse into Impactful Careers at 4lifeskills

Working in the disability sector is not just a job; it's a commitment to making a difference in people's lives. At 4lifeskills, we take pride in our team members who bring passion, dedication, and a sense of purpose to their roles. Let's delve into the journeys of two remarkable individuals who have dedicated a significant part of their careers to 4lifeskills.

Sarah: Nurturing Growth for 9 Years

Sarah's journey with 4lifeskills began nine years ago when she joined the organisation through a work placement opportunity in 2014. What drew her in was not just a job but an environment that offered flexibility around her responsibilities as a parent. Sarah emphasises the supportive work culture at 4lifeskills, highlighting the collaborative spirit where everyone contributes ideas for the greater good of clients and the organisation.

Over the years, Sarah transitioned into a management position, a testament to 4lifeskills' commitment to internal promotion. Now as an Assistant Area Manager, Sarah reflects on the multigenerational aspect of the workplace. Her own daughter, Michelle has joined the organisation, and they're not the only family duo; 4lifeskills welcomes a father-son team, fostering a unique familial atmosphere.

What sets 4lifeskills apart for Sarah is the sense of connectedness. Unlike her experiences in other disability support organisations, 4lifeskills thrives on collaboration, making each team member feel part of something bigger and supported. For nine years, Sarah has found happiness and fulfillment in a workplace that values advocacy, growth, and the power of a connected community.

Her daughter, Michelle, finds fulfillment at 4lifeskills for the same reason. Her two other siblings have also grown to be passionate about community service and volunteered at our end-of-year event in 2023.

Leanne, Assistant Area Manager of our Spearwood branch.

Leanne: 18 Years of Inspiring Commitment

Meet Leanne, an Assistant Area Manager with an impressive 18-year tenure at 4lifeskills. In an employment landscape where staff often change roles every 2-3 years, Leanne's enduring commitment stands out. What has kept her engaged? The variety in her everyday tasks and the profound impact she witnesses in clients' lives.

Leanne's greatest rewards come from witnessing client growth and development. She shares a poignant story of a community project at Southlakes that started with feeding ten members but grew into a decade-long community food program serving over 50-60 members daily. This project not only built life skills but also created a sense of community and belonging.

The 4lifeskills working environment, according to Leanne, is filled with passionate individuals dedicated to enhancing the lives of those living with disabilities. Every day brings new learning opportunities as the team collaborates with specialists such as occupational therapists, physiotherapists, and many more promoting a holistic approach to health and care.

For Leanne, disability support is more than people might think. It's about fostering skill development, confidence, and independence. The goal is to enable individuals to do things they've never done before. Leanne finds inspiration in the younger staff members who bring positivity and innovative ideas to the table.

What stands out for Leanne is 4lifeskills' commitment to providing holidays, or Great Escapes as they are fondly named, as part of their program. Recognising the privilege of going on a holiday, the organisation ensures individuals living with disabilities have the same opportunity. These holidays not only offer a break, the chance to build new friendships and new skills but also provides respite for families and loved ones.

Leanne's experience has made her more aware of life's challenges and the determination individuals with disabilities display. Working with people facing adversity has been one of the most inspiring aspects of her career, reminding her to appreciate life's blessings.
