What It Means to Be a Woman Business Owner: Tips for Empowerment and Success
What It Means to Be a Woman Business Owner
With everything going on in the world, many women are feeling powerless. Like their fate may be in someone else’s hands. Well, I’m here to tell you that it’s not. You can take your fate and make it whatever you want it to be. You can be your true authentic self. You can be successful. You can build a business. You can create your own security. You can care for your families.
You have power.
As a woman business owner, I can tell you firsthand that it’s not without its trials and difficulties. But the point is that you can build something just the same as anyone else can. I want to share some tips with the current and would be woman business owners in my network that helped me build a six figure operation. So you can feel empowered to do the same.
A Little about Me
I have a CPA background, and I witnessed countless clients, both men and women, struggling to navigate the complex maze of financial jargon required to successfully run and grow companies. So about 20 years ago, I set out on a heartfelt mission to provide clients with practical and effective accounting and bookkeeping services that would help them reach their goals.
If I’m being honest, one of my biggest challenges in the beginning was operating in an industry that’s dominated by males. I was looked at as a woman. I had to fight to prove myself as someone who knew what they are doing before people would see me for my credentials and my skills, and not just a woman. It was exhausting.
But I kept going. I didn’t stop.
I formulated what I wanted to accomplish on a deep level. I kept creating more and more value for my clients to the point where everyone, male and female, had to respect me and my work. Once I realized that the world was open and learned how to let go of things that didn’t serve my goals, each day became easier and easier.
My main challenge now is to constantly think about how I can serve other women, my network, and all of my clients, no matter their gender. I built and continue to build my business, while also raising my kids and actually being there for them.
And you can too.
Mindset Tips for Building a Woman Owned Business
Identify your purpose – This is the work you have to put in at the very beginning. What is your “why”? Are you building a product that makes people’s lives easier? Do you want to create jobs in the community? Do you want to help other businesses achieve certain goals? What are you trying to achieve? Determine that and it will get you through the difficult challenges that you are going to face.
Always stay tenacious – Every business owner is going to face setbacks and difficulties. Especially women. That’s not a judgement, it’s just a fact. Don’t retreat and don’t lose sight of your goal. You have your “why” and you need to fight for it. Accept that you are creating value for others, and create so much of it that no one can discount you for being a woman. Keep going.
Don’t let Impostor Syndrome keep you down – Impostor Syndrome are basically feelings of inadequacy that persist even when you have evident success. This can lead to self-doubt, feelings that you aren’t supposed to be doing what you’re doing, and anxiety. Always remind yourself out loud that what you are doing is worthwhile, you are good at what you do, and you have earned every bit of success that you have.

Just get started – Don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good, and don’t think you have to wait to start building your business. Do it now. Don’t wait. Develop a minimum viable product or service and then start selling it. All the details will be worked out in the process.
Connect with other women – You might feel like you are alone, but there are many other female entrepreneurs out there. Join women-focused groups and business associations, find like minded women, feed off of each other’s success. Empower and help each other.
