To illustrate, it is not uncommon for Companies to automate their hiring systems. It saves the Company millions in billable hours and is supposed to shift through the sea of applicants and ensure the Hiring Manager only has to content with pre-screened candidates who have met a list of pre-set criteria.
Amazon's machine-learning hiring tool, developed to streamline the recruitment process by automating resume reviews, encountered significant issues with gender bias. The tool was designed to rate job candidates on a scale of one to five stars, much like how products are rated on Amazon. The goal was to create a system that could quickly identify the top candidates for technical positions, reducing reliance on human recruiters. However, by 2015, Amazon discovered that the tool was not evaluating candidates in a gender-neutral manner. The AI had been trained using resumes submitted over a decade, the majority of which came from men, reflecting the male-dominated tech industry. As a result, the system learned to prefer male candidates, penalizing resumes that included terms associated with women, such as "women's chess club captain," and downgrading graduates from all-women's colleges.
Despite efforts to adjust the algorithm and remove specific gendered biases, the underlying issue persisted. The system continued to display a tendency to favor male candidates, raising concerns that the AI might develop other, subtler forms of discrimination. In addition, the tool often recommended unqualified candidates due to problems with the data used to train it.
Recognizing that these issues were too significant to overcome, Amazon disbanded the team working on the project in 2017. Although recruiters occasionally referred to the tool's recommendations, they never fully relied on it due to its unreliability.
Real-World Impact
The consequences of irresponsible AI training are not just theoretical—they're real, and they affect people's lives. Consider the multiple cases of facial recognition technology, which have been shown to have higher error rates for people of color. In law enforcement, this can lead to false arrests and unjust profiling, eroding public trust and exacerbating racial tensions.

Privacy and Security- Should AI Know it All?
International frameworks such as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (Article 12) and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (Article 17) protect individuals against arbitrary interference with their privacy. In Nigeria, Section 37 of the Constitution guarantees citizens’ rights to privacy, and so does the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023 which focuses on safeguarding personal data.

While this might seem convenient, it also means that the AI is constantly collecting data on when you are home, what you are doing, and even your sleep patterns. Without stringent privacy protections, this data could be misused, leading to invasive surveillance or identity theft.
To ensure we are on the same page, I should not be able to type in ‘’tell me about Sharon Juwah” into MetaAI and results bring forward my place of work, home address, phone number, information about my children, etc.? Even if I probably have this information in the public domain and on LinkedIn or Instagram, if I can get all that information from one text prompt, I might as well ask ‘what time does Sharon Juwah leave her house everyday?’. If the app has some sort of integration with google maps, that information is not difficult to find out at all. And to drive the point home, if I can get my hands on that information, if I have malicious intentions, I can arrange for you to be kidnapped, or hijacked, or assaulted etc and that is just one of the multiple possibilities. Bone- chilling indeed!
Responsible AI training involves not only ensuring that AI systems handle data securely but also that they operate transparently. Users should be aware of what data is being collected, how it is being used, and who has access to it. This transparency builds trust and ensures that AI enhances, rather than diminishes, human dignity.
The Trust Factor

Users should be able to understand how decisions are made and have the ability to contest them if necessary. Additionally, there should be mechanisms in place to hold AI developers and operators accountable for the outcomes of their systems.

Controllability also includes incorporating safety mechanisms such as fail-safes and overrides that prevent AI systems from making harmful decisions. In addition, this would ensure that AI systems serve as tools that enhance human capabilities rather than replace human judgment.

These frameworks should address not only the technical aspects of AI development but also the broader societal implications.
