What it Means to Be a Digital-First Business
We're in it now - the digital-first business era, as I call it.
For years I tried to disrupt traditional business models. I told entrepreneurs how I started making video content on my smartphone, posting on LinkedIn and other platforms, and how that was a gateway into a new business world for me.
I strongly encouraged them to do the same get ahead of the digital curve.
?Make high-value educational/entertaining/inspiring content
?Make it both business and personal
?Recognize video is the crown jewel, but you don't need a Hollywood-style production
?Make connections, not commercials.
I offered to consult and help come up with the right strategy.
And then... crickets.
THEN CAME THE CHANGE-RESISTANT EXCUSES
"Oh yeah, we should get someone to create a social media content calendar and all the content for us. We don't have time for that," some said.
They didn't get it.
Some said, "We have a great website that has a video on it, our corporate colours, our logo, and it shares everything about what our company offers."
They didn't get it, either. It's not about your corporate themed website that nobody visits, and it's certainly not about you.
"We've been successfully doing locally focussed business in person for years. We don't need to fix what isn't broken," some said.
Can you guess what the COVID-19 pandemic broke? Consumer habits are forever changed.
BUT IT'S NOT TOO LATE FOR YOU
The sad reality is that some organizations will suffer the demise of Digital Darwinism if they haven't already vanished. COVID-19 just catalyzed the process.
Some are surviving, though.
And while many may be wishing they got ahead of the digital curve sooner, the strong and sensible will adapt quickly, and they will future-proof their businesses of all kinds.
I don't care if you're a barber or a lawyer or a dog walker. You can become a communication centric digital-first business.
It takes a long-term commitment of time, effort and consistency to grow a digital footprint big enough that Google recognizes your presence and your customers can find multiple pathways to you.
Your customers have already moved online in droves to look for not just the kinds of products and services you offer, but first and foremost, who puts in the most effort to earn their trust.
And their money.
Start now.
