What is Maya?

Because of the number of dreams I've been having, I made it a point to remind myself before sleeping that if things go weird; to say - YOU ARE DREAMING!, take control of the dream! But instead of controlling the dream I just kept waking up.
So, in one of these moments, I woke up, and told my wife to remind me to write down the mini epiphany about the conscious and sub-conscious dream state in relation to life and "maya". A Buddhist concept of the illusion that we perceive of the world that we live in.
So all this happened while I was still in bed...
"Crap, I thought I could control the dream", in my usual excited self of almost achieving something but failed... and rudely talking about it at some wee hour of the morning.
"...but when I was switching from conscious to subconscious I realized that I have no control whatsoever..."
"...I just snap back into the room and I can feel the bed, air-conditioning and you beside me."
"Perhaps Buddha was right about this self-awareness meditation, the practice of being aware of your heart beat, breathing, soaking in experiences from all the five senses, and just being present and aware..."
"... not the dream environment, but the true reality"
"... perhaps he meant to say that life is just like a dream because our mental state, emotions, influences, biases, mental baggage that we carry are in fact trapping us in a predestined path..."
"... course of actions that plays itself out over and over again."
"...we change jobs, relationships, beliefs, and yet we waste away existence repeating the same mistakes..."
"... a virtual existence - maya; while we could have a real existence with the world."
"... instead of choosing and seeking happiness; we allow sadness, anger, a sense rejection and depression to cage our experiences..."
"... that the world that we are feeling while we are awake is merely a dream which we have no control over; unless we are aware that we are dreaming..."
"... and by meditating on the outward senses versus being poisoned by the baggage and mental filters that are all inward; we could ultimately, wake up."
Only to realize as the alarm went off, that I dreamt the entire thing.
As I complete writing this, it makes me also wonder whether I am still dreaming now...
