What Matters Most in Building a Legacy? Insights from the Community

Building a legacy is one of our most meaningful responsibilities as parents, grandparents, and mentors. It’s about ensuring that the generations who follow us are equipped with security and the tools to thrive in an uncertain future.

Recently, I asked my LinkedIn community:

“What’s the most essential gift you want to give your children or grandchildren this Christmas?”

The poll offered four options: Financial Security, Opportunities for Growth, Education and Skills, and Freedom to Choose Their Future.

The poll sparked an engaging discussion that revealed diverse perspectives on what matters most in building a lasting legacy.

Poll Results Overview

Our recent poll garnered 1,591 impressions, reflecting substantial interest and engagement from our community. Here’s how participants voted:

  • Financial Security: 42%
  • Opportunities for Growth: 8%
  • Education and Skills: 25%
  • Freedom to Choose Their Future: 25%

These results indicate that while financial security is a top priority, education, skills, and the freedom to design one's future are equally valued. The lower emphasis on growth opportunities suggests that respondents may view it as a natural outcome of the other elements.

Themes from the Discussion

1. Financial Security as a Foundation

Many respondents emphasized the importance of financial security as the bedrock of a legacy.

  • @Lisa Harris, Empowering Leaders, commented:

“Financial security provides stability, but a balanced mix of all gifts creates a lasting legacy.”

  • @Tiba Al-Khalidy, Executive and Business Consultant, added:

“Financial security is so important, but honestly, they all matter. They all play a huge role in shaping a bright future.”

Financial stability is clearly still a primary concern for many, especially as the world faces economic uncertainty.

2. Education and Skills: Tools for Growth

Education and skills were seen as transformative gifts that enable future independence.

  • @David Pugh, investment specialist, simply stated:

“Education all the way.”

  • @Ramiro Salgado, Business Coach and Strategist, highlighted:

“Opportunities for growth and education are priceless gifts, shaping a brighter future filled with possibilities and independence.”

These responses underscore the importance of equipping the next generation with knowledge and skills to adapt to a changing world.

3. Freedom to Choose Their Future

The ability to make independent choices resonated deeply with many.

  • @Tony Triccas CeMAP - Expert Mortgage/Protection Adviser shared:

“Freedom to choose their future is such a powerful gift. Empowering the next generation with the ability to shape their own paths and embrace opportunities that align with their passions is truly invaluable.”

  • @Melitta Campbell - Value Whisperer ?? echoed:

“All of the above are so important, but freedom to choose their future stands out. Empowering them to make their own decisions is the ultimate gift.”

This theme highlights a growing focus on fostering independence and ensuring the next generation can forge their own paths.

4. Mentorship and Community: A Holistic Legacy

One of the most compelling ideas came from @Fitz Spencer, who emphasized the power of mentorship:

“Gifting access to mentorship and a community focused on financial independence is a powerful way to set children or grandchildren up for long-term success.”

As someone who leads a digital mentorship community, I see daily how mentorship and community provide the guidance, security, and skills needed for future success.
