What matters is helping others...

Publisher: “Victor - what is your purpose for writing a book?… what do you want your book to do for you?”

Me: I just want to share the knowledge I’ve accumulated over the years - it’s simply an extension of what I’ve been sharing in my newsletter for the past several years.

Publisher: “Many authors are public speakers, consultants, advisors, etc and their book is an extension of their business offering and a springboard to expand their reach. It’s only natural that when you share something of value, that some value accrues to yourself.”

Me: I’ll be fine if speaking engagements or more coaching opportunities happen, but to be clear, my happy place is when I’m just doing what I do and expecting nothing in return - whether it’s being responsive to an outreach from a former colleague in career transition or speaking to a classroom of college students on a topic relevant to their syllabus.

On this journey to publish a book, the impactful lessons I have learned in my own personal and professional development are crystalized. While my background in accounting and finance has provided me with valuable insights, the principles of connecting with others, building trust, and creating a supportive environment are paramount.

At this reflective phase of my career, it’s “circle-of-life” joy to be in touch with people I worked with or basketball players I coached almost decades ago. Way back in the 1990’s, I remember telling youth basketball players and their parents that “I coach for the love of basketball, but also for making what I hope will be lifetime connections where I can help or advise them in the future.”

Speaking of joy, that’s how I describe this phase of life where I have the pleasure of advising or being a reference for some of those young ladies I coached from their pre-teen years. Same applies for leaders I worked with across the US, sub-Saharan Africa, and in Canada. I’m honored to have these long-lasting connections that’s truly two-way; I get so much out of helping because while I’m helping, I’m gaining a lens into other industries, issues, relationships and so much more.

Growing up on the south side of Chicago, I faced many challenges, but I was fortunate to have strong support and examples from my wonderful mom, hard-working siblings, and others. As a matter of fact, as I penned this note, I paused to send a text and a family picture to my K1-2 elementary school teacher, Dr. Fields. As on most holidays, I received a holiday card from her a few days ago. It’s no wonder I’m wired to maintain long-lasting connections!

With the launch of my book, I am committed to engaging with readers through group sessions, one-on-one meetings, and virtual interactions, with the ultimate goal of helping individuals pursue their aspirations. ...Perhaps you wonder what it’s like to have a career coach. With interactions planned over the next months of 2024, I plan to share what I gained when being coached for the first time in my career (the last years of my corporate career actually); and also learnings gained as trained Executive Coach.

As the pre-sale period comes to a close April 18, I am inspired to reach out to those who believe in my message and encourage them to join the inner circle. This is not just about selling books, but about building a community of connected individuals who are dedicated to personal growth and development.

Thank you for your support, and I look forward to the journey ahead.
