What Martin Luther King Jr. Can Teach You About Your Career
Brad Karsh
Workplace Expert, Keynote Speaker, Executive Coach and CEO @ JB Training Solutions
In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday January 19th, we are sharing a few lessons and words of wisdom he imparted over 40 years ago. Many of these ideas can still be applied to your own professional life.
“Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that.”
One key to success is positive thinking. In fact, it is scientifically proven that optimism will help you perform better. Keep a positive mindset on a daily basis, and encourage those around you to do the same! Leave reminders for yourself throughout the day. This will help morale as well as productivity.
“We must accept finite disappointment but never lose infinite hope.”
You’re not always going to win, but you can always learn from your mistakes. Make goals that are reachable and measureable. With research and reflection, you can bounce back and stay positive as you dive into next actions. Check out Brad’s perspective on New Year’s Resolutions to help plan your goals for 2015.
“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, “What are you doing for others?”
You can’t achieve that dream career all on your own. Learn from as many people around you as possible, and teach your expertise to others as well. Help establish this culture at your company by instituting a mentoring program. These programs can help build camaraderie among new and experienced members of your company, as well as streamline the onboarding process.
“There comes a time when silence is betrayal.”
Feedback is crucial when it comes to creating open and honest communication with your team. Although, it might be tough at first, everyone appreciates a chance to grow and develop. Still not convinced? Read the spinach story, and we’re pretty sure you’ll agree with us.
“If I cannot do great things, I can do small things in a great way.”
Do everything with drive, passion and purpose. At JB Training Solutions, we call this being CHALANT. Think the opposite of nonchalant. Our President, Brad Karsh can tell you about the history of CHALANT. How can you embody CHALANT and these words of wisdom from Martin Luther King Jr. at your organization?
