What Manner of Man Is This?
WHAT MANNER OF MAN IS THIS?
(Matthew 8:26–27 NKJV) But He said to them, “Why are you fearful, O you of little faith?” Then He arose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. (27) So the men marveled, saying, “Who can this be, that even the winds and the sea obey Him?”
When Jesus’s disciples saw what he did to the wind and the waves, they exclaimed: “What manner of man is this? (Mat. 8:27 KJV) At least four of his disciples were professional fishermen—very experienced in boating on this lake. They fully understood the danger and power of the sudden storms that could arise. When this one with gale force winds engulfed them, their own professionalism—which had instilled great fear of storms—caused them to believe that not even their experience and skill could save them. Suddenly, Jesus—a preacher or carpenter at best—stood up to deal with it. He didn’t use sailing or boating skills; he wasn’t a trained meteorologist either; Jesus used his words: “He arose and rebuked the winds and the sea.” (Note: “rebuke” means to censure or admonish, that is, to tell off.)
The power in Jesus’s words must have absolutely astounded everyone: his disciples, angels, demons, and every molecule, atom, thermal current—even the laws of physics and thermodynamics. Most of them had never heard anything with such authority before, and for others, not since they heard God say, “Let there be light!”
Jesus was a man of words—God’s living Word in action. He used his words under the great anointing of the Holy Spirit, and spoke them with absolute authority through holy lips to:
? Calm the storm,
? Multiply bread and fish,
? Cast out demons,
? Heal the sick,
? Forgive people, and to
? Prophesy the future.
Jesus’s words:
? Carry life (John 6:63)
? Are life to those who find them and health to all their flesh (Prov. 4:20–24)
? Are sent to heal the sick (Psalm 107:20)
? Are the sword of the spirit (Eph. 6:10–18)
? Are creative (John 1:1–3)
? Are eternal and everlasting (Mat. 24:35)
? Can renew our minds (Rom. 12:2)
? Impart faith (Rom. 10:17)
? Have God watching over them to perform them (Jer. 1:12)
? Have all authority in heaven and on earth (Mat. 28:18)
? Are upholding all things (Heb. 1:1–3)
? Shake the wilderness (Psalm 29:8)
? Will outlast the earth (Mat. 24:35, Mark 13:31, Luke 21:33)
? Are a lamp to my feet and a light to my path (Psalm 119:105)
Today is the perfect day to receive a word from Jesus. He promised: “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me” (John 10:27 KJV). You can hear his voice today.
Elijah heard the “still, small voice” of God in his “cave” (1 Kings 19:12–16 KJV). The word he heard in his private, secret place brought his whole nation a revival: it drove out the wicked government, and removed false worship; it anointed a new generation of leaders. What can Jesus’s living words do through you?
Remember: “Greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world” (1 John 4:4), God watches over his word to perform it (Jer. 1:12), and that no word of God is void of power (Luke 1:37). He is the anointed, resurrected, all powerful, all knowing, living Word of the living God—the Lord Jesus Christ of Nazareth.
“What sort of man is this?”
? He is the living Word of God (John 1:1–3)
? He is the man of “great faith”
? He is the “wise man” who built his house on the rock (Mat. 7)
? He is the “blessed man” who meditates in God’s word day and night (Psalm 1)
? He is the man who “calls those things which be not as though they were” (Rom. 4:17 AKJV)
? He is our “wisdom, righteousness, sanctification and redemption” (1 Cor. 1:30)
? He is the one with “all authority in heaven and on earth” (Mat. 28:18)
? He is the one who heals the sick and drives out demons with a word (Mat. 8:16)
? He is the one who carried our infirmities and bore our sicknesses (Mat. 8:17, 1 Pet. 2:24)
? He is the sin sacrifice and burden bearer
? He is Jesus, the Son of God, the Son of Man, the Bright and Morning Star, the friend who sticks closer than a brother
? He is The Lord Jesus Christ, the all-sufficient one
? He is the lover of our souls, the way, the truth, and the life
? He is more than enough, he is everything it takes
? “Even the winds and the sea obey him.”
And he wants to do all of this through you. All you need is the living word, faith in God, and full surrender.
