Your:
· job/ position
· your background/ family tree
· Your accomplishments
· your social contributions/ responsibility to the economy/ society/ family etc.
· your wisdom/ experience/ intelligence/skills, talents and abilities
If you ever feel irrelevant just take a look at this list. Do you find yourself in any of these categories? Where do you fit in?
Being relevant is not a feeling you get, it is a result of consistent action by you (if you belong in the second category, then someone close like your father or forefathers probably already did the job). It is a result of waking up daily or weekly (as the case may be) and contributing to something bigger than you e.g. your industry, your environment, your family etc.
Mark Zuckerberg was in Lagos, Nigeria and everyone was excited.. can I get a why? That’s because he is the CEO/ founder of the most popular social media platform at the moment, Facebook. And that’s not the only why, he also carries with him, intelligence, experience and a pool of talents and abilities that anyone would be curious about. Asides all that he has also been of immense social contribution to the society at large. If we take a second peep into our list we’d find that he fits into all categories except one: background or family tree.
So really, the question now becomes how much relevance do you want to have?
Personally, I just want to have people that care about me and whom I care about as well. If I’ve got that then I’m okay. Really?... Yes, really. :)
But come to think of it, I care about my work, I care about my family, I care about my religion, I care about my friends, I care about my country. I care about so many things and it would only be nice to have all these care about me too.
So what am I saying really?
We all want to be loved and appreciated i.e. relevant, wherever we are. However, that wouldn’t just happen except you take relevant action to be a person of impact rather than just another head that fills the crowd.
It is not okay to just do the basic things of life and not care about anybody else. It is not okay to ignore the needs of those around you all because you are doing just fine. Take some time out of your time in this world and do something not for you this time, but for someone else. And one of the most fulfilling ways to do that is to not expect anything in return (e.g. appreciation or something).
Eventually, God has a way of rewarding those who commit to selflessly helping others. That is not for you to worry about.
So ditch whatever false ideas you have about relevance and go get down to the business of being impactful because that’s the only way to be remembered long after you’ve left this precious world. Well, for those who care about that.
