What makes a strong clinician?

Welcome to Beyond the Zoom Square: a monthly installment by your team at Motivo Health sharing the latest industry news, compliance updates, and anything else mental health, continuing education, and/or clinical supervision-related. Employers, gather around - this one’s for you.?

We know there is a mental health provider shortage and so hiring for your organization or agency may be difficult right now. That is why Motivo Health works toward solving the mental health provider shortage by providing quality clinical supervision to employers and individuals to help clinicians achieve licensure.?

From our experience with clinicians and with insight from our clinicians on leadership, we put together a few ideas of what makes a strong clinician.?

A few (not all) attributes of a strong clinician:

  • Empathic - this trait is a necessity for clinicians, no matter if they are on the administrative side or the therapy side. Being empathic is part of the job - to feel for the clients in order to provide quality service and improve their mental well-being.?
  • Assertive - Utilizing a communication style that allows clinicians to be heard, seen, and respected by clients. Setting boundaries to provide a safe setting for clients to heal.?
  • Ambitious - This goes with many employees across multiple industries, however strong clinicians are ambitious in their own growth and in the growth of their clients. While it helps to be realistic of the client’s progress, it also important to set goals?
  • Ethical - This one goes without saying, but a strong practice’s foundation is built on ethics. Leaving this here for good measure: NASW Code of Ethics .?

How employers can help:?

  • Covering clinical supervision - this is a perk that doesn’t go unnoticed. Clinicians needs supervision to not only achieve licensure, but also to receive guidance and support as they start their career and develop their “self-of-the-therapist.” And guess what - Motivo Health can help with that!?
  • Providing continuing education opportunities - whether it’s online like Motivo Learning or in-person at conferences and events across the country, offering this as a perk is required for licensure and allows your clinicians to learn and upskill.?
  • Developing career paths - like any other career, employees want to know a growth plan. Whether that means managing other clinicians or moving into another department, it helps retention if clinicians know there is a bright future for them at the organization.
  • Listening - This one is the most important of them all. Listening and taking action based on your learnings allows clinicians to feel heard and present in their daily work. Active listening from C-Suite to a managerial role is pivotal for employees.?

Anything we missed? We would love to hear from you in the comments.?

We appreciate all the clinicians out there working to make our world a better place. We appreciate the employers out there supporting clinicians in their journey.?
