What makes a great research tech app?

Research agencies, data providers and tech firms: here are some essential elements of a great #ResTech proposition.

How many of you would score 10 out of 10?

  1. Know who your customer is and build specifically for them. Try appealing to everybody and you'll be noticed by nobody.
  2. Describe your value in terms that matter to your user. Focus on their outcomes, not your product or process.
  3. Subtract. You can always say it better with fewer words.
  4. Integrate. APIs, ecosystems and interoperability are table stakes. Glorious isolation is a death sentence for your app.
  5. Be transparent. Buyers want to self-educate. In crowded markets, they have simple choice heuristics. Features and pricing hard to find? You're off the list.
  6. Let users get hands on. Even if you can't offer free trials or a freemium model, you can give better demo access or open up specific features. Trying is now a critical part of buying.
  7. Reduce friction everywhere. Have singular calls-to-action, strip out unnecessary steps, kick down barriers to enquiry, trial, adoption and growth.
  8. Make it beautiful. Gorgeous design is not frivolous or a luxury. It is a key part of your user experience.
  9. Be transparent. Publish roadmaps, product boards, customer feedback. It builds trust quickly.
  10. Distribute properly. Research industry events are fine if you're targeting a shrinking part of the market. But the new buyers - the high growth segments - won't find you there.

Agree Mike, so much of the UX is undervalued in MR tools, I’m a big believer that we have to work even harder now to grab and retain people’s attention and engagement in research so UX and our tone as researchers is paramount
