Some one asked of me.....
What makes a great business leader?
I decided to really think about it, rather than just go with....
“Someone who has Vision and the ability to go forward”
Which is important.
I said...
In business there’s those that run lifestyle businesses and those who have what it takes to lead a big business with employees . 2 very different types of leadership.
For purposes of the question, let’s assume you mean a big business.
It’s simply this....
“You’ll live like most people won’t.
When the business does well, give the credit to others and when things go wrong, show up and deal with it and accept responsibility as yours- even when others are the cause.
You’ll have empathy in abundance for your team, you’ll not be a critic, even though, for most this is their style. ( this is tough when the world is against you)
You’ll survive and never give up.
You’ll be like a parent that fights for a child they love, in this case, the child is your employees.
You’ll accept that you’re insane to take on the long journey; knowing more have failed than survived.
In the back of your mind; on the tough days...
You’ll know, you’re doing things that most people won’t even cope with or consider”
So. What keeps you going?
Is it knowing that your rewards will out way what most people only dream of?
The reward being total freedom in all areas of life. Time. Wealth. Happiness. Choice.
....I think a little of that does come in to it for me; at times. I do wish it was easier, then I come to realise... I know I just need to be better.
I am sure wealth is some people’s sole aim, but this is not the trait of a great leader.
For me, it’s never been cash, I like nice things for sure, but it’s always been a sense of “look what we’ve created” that’s the kick, I desire.
I’m not stupid, I also get, the more cash/profit/access to wealth you have, the easier you can create.
The way I see entrepreneurship....
Entrepreneurs/leaders are architects, they map out what they want to build, they know they need great, motivated builders to make this happen.... they look for solutions, and know sometimes you need to go through a “See Saw” process of survive then thrive.
Lastly, great entrepreneurs know that they’re in competition with them selves not others.
They think- how can we be better? how can we do more for our customers? how can we be better employers? how can we do more, for what matters to us?
I also ponder this...
We’ve always had great relations with our competitors, we’ve kept an eye on what others are doing - for the quickest blink. I genuinely believe that.
Trust me, it’s far better to keep both eyes on your business and make your business better.
Be in competition with yourself not others.
This way, you’ll always be the innovators and everyone will be in your ships wake, rather than you in theirs.
Some will disagree with me, but this is the life I’ve been leading..... what do you think?
