What makes ERP implementations challenging and what are the key ingredients?

ERP implementations are hard work and require specialist help. Gartner estimates that between 55% - 75% of all ERP implementations fail to meet their objectives. They cite the four biggest reasons for failure are: resistance to change, inadequate sponsorship, unrealistic expectations and poor project management. Many well known companies that have had implementation failures. So what makes them challenging?

Transformation programmes are complex initiatives, involving organisational change and the development of new processes, systems and technologies, with the aim of creating more value for the organisation. These changes can be difficult to implement, as they can involve a lot of disruption, uncertainty and stress. Additionally, transformation programmes need to be managed carefully and metrics need to be tracked to measure success.

One of the main challenges of transformation programmes is getting buy-in from the affected stakeholders. The stakeholders may have different ideas and interests, and these need to be managed if the programme is to be successful. Additionally, there may be resistance to change as people may be comfortable with the status quo, and feel that the proposed changes will rock the boat too much.

Another challenge is making sure that the programme gets adequate resources. Transformation programmes require time, effort and resources to be successful, and these need to be allocated, and carefully managed, to prevent them from being wasted.

Finally, implementation can be difficult as the desired objectives may be hard to define, and progress may be slow and unpredictable. It is important to develop and manage a realistic timeline, as well as ensure that testing and feedback loops are in place to ensure that the transformation programme is on track.

So, in conclusion, transformation programmes can be notoriously challenging. They require careful planning and management and the ability to manage stakeholders and resources effectively. If these challenges are met, however, transformation programmes can provide organisations with substantial long-term benefits.

This begs the question - what are the key ingredients? Below I list what I consider to be the 6 most important ingredients to have a fair chance at succeeding.

1. Clear Goals: Setting clear goals for the ERP implementation upfront and making sure those goals are understood by everyone involved is key to a successful ERP project.?

2. Strong Leadership: A strong leadership team that can provide vision, direction, and motivation to the ERP project team, is essential to ensure the project stays on track.

3. Project Management: Appropriate project management practices should be followed, such as developing a project plan, establishing clear roles and responsibilities, tracking progress, measuring performance, and responding to issues and risks.

4. Communication: Regular and effective communication should be established between the project team, stakeholders, and the user. This should include progress updates, status reports, and issue resolution.

5. Change Management: Change management should be employed, in order to ensure the project team and stakeholders are on board with the changes that come with the new system.

6. Training & Education: Proper training and education of users should be done to ensure they understand the new system and can effectively use it to improve their operations.
