What is MACH architecture, and why should I care about it?

MACH architecture is a new-ish technology principle, and it's everywhere!

What does MACH mean?

The acronym MACH stands for

  • Microservices-based
  • API-first
  • Cloud-native SaaS
  • Headless.

Seemingly a new "buzzword", the principles of MACH has been the driving force behind the biggest innovators in digital technology for some time. Microservices, API-first, cloud-based, and headless principles are nothing new.

  • Microservices have been around since 2005 and are widely regarded as a best practice in the development industry.
  • APIs have been around almost as long as computer programming, and cloud-based technology has been around since the 90s!
  • Headless architecture has been possible with many CMS types for a long time (with a bit of know-how), but in recent years, "headless" has exploded, made famous by Headless CMSs like Contentful or Umbraco Heartcore.

If MACH principles are nothing new, why do we need the word MACH?

Fair question.

What do Microservices, APIs, and Headless and Cloud computing all have in common?

They're all composable, which means they're pluggable, scalable, and replaceable—crucial stuff in today's world.

The acronym has grouped the best-of-the-best that can help businesses be more agile!

The MACH Alliance.

When MACH was born, so too was a pretty cool organisation, The MACH Alliance (a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to making flexible and swappable technology a priority).
