What is Low-Code?
Two things happen at the end of the year. 1. There is all kinds of reflection on the year that is coming to and end. 2. We start thinking about the future, about new things, about change.
It's also a time where many industries and analysts publish white papers and other documents on the must do's for the new year. One of the tech terms that has been popping up on these lists lately is Low-Code. I wanted to take a minute to explain what is low-code and also offer up some additional resources to help explain the new phenomenon.
What is Low-Code and why would a company use it According to Wikipedia: A low-code development platform (LCDP) is software that provides an environment programmers use to create application software through graphical user interfaces and configuration instead of traditional computer programming. The platform may focus on design and development of a particular kind of application: such as databases, business processes, or user interfaces such as web applications. Such platforms may produce entirely operational applications, or require additional coding for specific situations. Low-code development platforms reduce the amount of traditional hand-coding, enabling accelerated delivery of business applications.
In simple terms- it's a way to build applications quickly without needing specialized developers. Why would a company choose to build applications on a low-code platform? Speed is probably the first reason. Gartner predicts that market demand for app development will grow at least five times faster than IT’s capacity to deliver through 2021. Companies using low-code to build apps can deliver 10 -20 times faster than traditional development. Another core benefit, because you build the application visually, non-technical stakeholders are more engaged, meaning you build an application that the end users actually like and will use.
You'll likely be seeing and hearing more about Low-Code in 2019 because it's a technology that is poised to grow exponentially as more and more companies embrace this transformational idea.
