What to look for in a Flow Measurement Auditor?

SOLV? has been conducting Flow Measurement Audits for over 20 years.

Audits are crucial for preventing mismeasurement and revenue loss, ensuring regulatory compliance, and verifying adherence to best practices regarding equipment, processes, management, and personnel competency.

Selecting the right auditor is a key component in ensuring an effective assessment of the measurement system.

But what should you look for in an auditor for your flow measurement system? We have outlined a few key considerations below.

Technical Proficiency

A competent flow measurement auditor should possess an in-depth understanding of flow measurement principles, technologies, and industry standards. They must be well-versed in various measurement techniques, both single and multiphase. Additionally, familiarity with relevant regulations such as API MPMS and ISO standards is imperative.

  • SOLV? auditors are actively engaged in development of new International Standards for measurement in a variety of measurement technical sub-areas.

Qualifications

Possession of Lead Auditor ISO 9001:2015 certification signifies expertise in quality management systems auditing. This qualification ensures auditors are well-equipped to assess adherence to ISO 9001 standards effectively.

  • All SOLV? engineers are CQI and IRCA Certified QMS Lead Auditors.

Experience

Experience is vital in flow measurement auditing. Look for auditors with a proven track record of successful audits across diverse energy operations. Their firsthand experience in evaluating flow measurement systems is crucial for ensuring accuracy and reliability.

  • For over two decades, SOLV? has conducted flow measurement and allocation audits worldwide, at both the design and operational phases of the system life cycle.

Integrity and Impartiality

Integrity is fundamental in auditing, particularly in industries where accuracy and reliability are critical. A reputable auditor upholds standards and maintains impartiality throughout the auditing process. They prioritise transparency and honesty in their findings and recommendations, irrespective of external pressures.

  • SOLV? is an independent inspection body with no affiliation with operators or equipment manufacturers, enabling us to provide impartial and objective audits. Our engineers take pride in their integrity and commitment to delivering accurate assessments without bias.

Attention to Detail

Precision in flow measurement hinges on meticulous attention to detail. A thorough auditor scrutinizes every aspect of the measurement process, from instrument calibration to fluid properties and environmental conditions. Detailed examination of each component of the measurement system can be aided by the application of a well-planned audit criteria.

  • SOLV? engineers ensure thorough scrutiny by assessing compliance with pre-defined audit criteria for each element of the scope. Our audits adhere to Energy Institute HM60 guidelines for auditing oil and gas measurement systems.

Analysis

A measurement auditor must have the statistical analytical skills required to decipher complex measurement data and detect anomalies or trends. They should be capable of conducting uncertainty analyses to evaluate measurement accuracy and recommend corrective measures when necessary.

  • Our engineers have over 20 years of uncertainty experience. We provide independent Quadrature Uncertainty results to the highest standard, verified by Monte Carlo Simulation, for flow measurement and allocation.

Communication

Effective communication is key for a successful flow measurement audit. An auditor should be able to articulate technical concepts clearly, both verbally and in written reports. They must also be able to collaborate effectively with stakeholders, including operations personnel, engineers, and regulatory bodies, to ensure comprehensive audit outcomes.

Good article bud, it does highlight the experience, traits, knowledge, attention to detail etc that goes into an audit……fortunately there are a few of us (providers) out there. And yes the importance of a good auditor is well understated, auditors should not be influenced by their clients even though it’s the client paying for it……..they report the true situation based on the audit criteria and agreed standards

Great article.. An operator's impression of the audit process is very much influenced by the individuals involved... Managing client expectations being a key challenge for the auditor throughout. No one likes surprises!
