What is Life? How to Live? but Why?
Background
There I was, waiting at the "T station" to board a train, after just welcoming the new years with a bunch of friends. A minute later, a gentleman named "Ben" shows up with his girlfriend.
It all started with a simple "Hello", as we boarded the train, the conversation went deep into Ben's career, his friends and family. Out of respect for Ben, I won't share the details. Thirty minutes into the conversation, we exchange our contact info and I get off at my stop.
At 3 am, there comes a text from Ben "I miss you already bro. I feel like we have been friends for lifetimes... You have a beautiful and powerful soul. This day and age people don't talk to each other, especially in a public setting. People are simply busy with smart phones; I wish people are friendlier and just talk to each other. Talking to you was really great, happy new year to you! good night!"
"Life" - Why the "Why"?
Now, back to the headline here, I'm on a personal mission to discover more about the "Why" behind life. To me
The "What" and the "How" are secondary. Why? Because the "Why" drives the "What and the "How."
Having "this spontaneous chance experience" with a complete stranger opened more about the "Why" behind life.
Life is not just about the "I", rather it is the people in one's life; significant other, family, friends, and the random people, who come and go.
Think about for a second, if our lives are just about us then we may be living like "Tom Hanks" from the movie "Cast Away" talking to "Wilson", the football. If you haven't see this movie, you must watch it, one of the best.
Chances are Ben and I may not meet again, but having a conversation with him made a profound impact on me about the purpose of life. The purpose or the "Why" of life is to experience with people including complete strangers, not just significant others, family, and friends.

8 年Great article. I agree, about asking why. I've been asking why my whole life and I think it helps us understand our fellow humans better which lends to more peaceful relations.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts Slavica Todorovic!
Melissa Shull! what a generous comment. Thanks much! Connection is part of being human and you are right even it for a short time, a connection can be a memorable one.

9 年It's an emotional aspect of us in our lives,,it is about complexity too,,we can;t live in isolation, but as humans we still live in a magical circle of our unfulfilled dreams, often,we let dark side of us prevail,,interesting question :Could a man survive living alone, separated from others for the whole life? I like your article, enjoyed reading
