What is Life Coaching

What is Life Coaching

When I mention I am a Life Coach, people ask me ′So what do you do?.′ A school friend of mine, whom I haven′t met for a while told me she googled ′What is Life Coaching′, before we went out for a dinner catch-up to understand what I do. ??

Over time, I have realised Life Coaching is not necessarily understood by the masses. Most confuse it with mental health support, therapy, counseling or mentoring. They are not completely wrong…but that is not the full truth either.

I wrote the below paragraph on my social media when I started Illuminext social media pages.

“Life coaches are not health professionals and they do not diagnose health conditions. But there are many overlaps in these disciplines. Life Coaching can be helpful in difficult mental situations such as facing a stressful event or feeling confused and needing clarity. But the primary focus of life coaching is personal growth and better outcomes.”

I thought I should elaborate a bit more. I am going to write more about this amazing field of work in my next few posts. Hope you will read and understand how coaching can help you (and of course what I do for a living ??)

  • ?Coaching is a process of helping an individual or a group to become better so that they can achieve their goals.?
  • Coaching can help you to improve your performance and develop new skills.
  • Coaching can help you to break away from habits that no longer serve you.
  • Coaching can help you to breakthrough from beliefs/perspectives that are limiting your ability to find happiness and success in life
  • There are many different types of coaching, usually, they are all grouped under the umbrella of Life Coaching (eg: Career Coaching, Leadership Coaching, Executive Coaching, Business Coaching, and Mindset Coaching- are just a few examples.
  • Coaching is usually done in a 1-on-1, face-to-face setting, but with the advancement of technology it is common to conduct online and also group coaching
  • A coach usually asks thought-provoking questions, listens actively, provides feedback and guidance for the client to progress toward their goals.
  • A coach can help you clarify your goals, identify obstacles, and create a workable plan to reach your desired outcome.
  • Coaching is generally focused on the present and future, rather than dwelling on the past.
