What level in your career do you need to reach to work on strategy?

Let’s talk about strategy: What level in your career do you need to reach to work on strategy??

“Strategy”: the definition is pretty straightforward, but the way it is used in conversations can create a lot of misunderstandings.?

Strategy is the plan of how to achieve your long-term goal/vision.

The best strategy is never done and it always improves with time, as it gets tested by reality over and over again.??The long-term goal usually stays the same (unless the market proves you wrong), while the plan on how you get there adapts to the market conditions and the available resources.

When I hear statements such as “ the strategy is unclear” ,“ they have no strategy” - what do you mean? The goal, the plan, following the plan??

I’ve been asked:

What level in your career do you need to reach to work on strategy? Any level, you can start from your first day in your career.

  • Do you need to be in a higher role to be strategic? NO.?
  • Do you need big projects and challenging tasks to be strategic? NO
  • Can you be strategic as an individual contributor! ABSOLUTELY?

You can always be strategic and build a strategy. As an individual contributor, it’s not going to be the company or the department strategy - but it’s gonna be yours, your own role, area, your partner or customer. Start with that.

Ask yourself:?

  • What’s your goal in this role??
  • How do you define your success?
  • What’s your plan to get there?

You built the perfect strategy! Most people do this. So how come the strategy doesn’t materialize??

Here’s the answer:

You gotta drive the strategy.

Driving means you’ll take control, you’ll work on building relationships, getting other people on board, adapt while you work your plan, and keep an eye on your end-goal.?
