What Level Facemask Do I Choose?
Facemask Levels -- Your Questions Answered!
You've probably seen facemasks graded as Level 1 or Level 3, and assumed that Level 3 must be better. Or perhaps Level 1 is? And better exactly how? Is the added cost of some masks really worth it?
What do those levels really mean?
The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) grades facemasks from levels 1-3 by measuring a variety of criteria, such as bacterial or particulate filtration, fluid resistance, and breathability. All levels qualify as medical masks that help to prevent transmitting viruses from the mask wearer to others. But they differ in effectiveness.
Level 1 masks (procedure masks) offer better breathability but provide a lower level of bacterial protection (95% filtration), and are less effective against bodily fluid sprays.
Level 3 masks (surgical masks) offer better bacterial protection (>98% filtration) and are twice as effective against bodily fluid splatters and sprays, but they offer less breathability. Level 3 masks provide the highest protection possible short of an N95 Respirator.
For those who are curious, yes there is a Level 2. These masks also offer >98% filtration protection, but they are only moderately effective against bodily fluid sprays.
Ready To Level Up?
You may have noticed that markets are currently swamped with Level 1 masks, but Level 3 masks are harder to find, especially at reasonable prices.
At Quintana Supply, we have Level 3 BL5005 facemasks in stock, and we are taking orders now!
And, of course, we continue to sell our popular MISC-MASK procedure mask for those who prefer it as well.
