Two important lung cancer discoveries were recently made in two different ICRF researchers’ labs. In Professor Nabieh Ayoub’s lab at Technion - Israel Institute of Technology, a postdoctoral researcher showed how a missing protein may open up new avenues for treating aggressive lung cancer. This research was made possible by an ICRF Project Grant, and an article recently published in Nature Communications acknowledges ICRF support. Read more: https://lnkd.in/evW7UuY8 In Professor Yosef Yarden’s lab at Weizmann Institute of Science, a postdoctoral researcher developed a synthetic antibody that when combined with a common lung cancer treatment, prevents relapse of lung adenocarcinoma tumors in mice. Ovarian cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer deaths among women. September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month and we're proud to highlight ICRF scientist Ruth Perets, MD, PhD, who has been doing research in this field for 27 years and also treats ovarian cancer patients at Rambam Health Care Campus. Dr. Perets’ work focuses on both prevention and treatment, and she uses mouse models to better understand ovarian cancer development in women. Her current ICRF grant has been made possible thanks to the Beverley Librach Abshez Initiative for Ovarian and Female Reproductive System Cancers. Every 3 minutes worldwide, a family is faced with the heartbreaking news that their child has been diagnosed with cancer. Compassionate Israeli researchers are working tirelessly to change the odds for these children who were dealt an unfair hand. In recognition of #ChildhoodCancerAwarenessMonth, we're pleased to highlight ICRF-funded scientist Shahar Frenkel, MD, PhD, and his work at Hadassah Medical Center exploring pediatric eye cancer. This clinician-scientist has saved 98 percent of the lives of the children he treats for localized pediatric retinoblastoma. He's also on a quest to develop a targeted treatment for it. Today, August 1st is World Lung Cancer Day. It is the deadliest type, taking more lives than colon, breast, and prostate cancers combined. It accounts for about 1 in 5 cancer deaths in the U.S. each year. ICRF Project Grant Recipient Dr. Sheera Adar hopes to change these odds. Did you know that when we inhale cigarette smoke, more than 60 compounds in it are damaging to our cells? Dr. Adar is studying DNA damage and mutations (like in the movie X-Men) in lung cells to better understand this deadly cancer.
