Leaders are often asked, "What do you want your legacy to be?"
Books have been written on the subject. "Personal Development Gurus" praise it as a peak of achievement, and a necessary base. Tons of money has been spent by leaders on how to "think" about legacy.
But there is a secret that isn't discussed often.
When you create a "Legacy", different people will have differing opinions on your legacy.
A Hero or a Villain? What is the True Legacy?
There is a leader in history that is often told as a horrifying villain.
But depending on where you live, this isn't always the case.
If you look at the landmass this leader held, it was nearly the same size as the most well-known empire during the same time. They held this landmass but were less technologically advanced than their larger competitor. In fact, the competing empire both paid tribute and required the services of this leader.
The competing empire - The Roman Empire.
The leader in question - Atilla the Hun.
Many history books paint Atilla as a horrible tyrant. He led barbarians to do awful things. Much of the history written around Atilla is filled with fear.
However, if you go to Hungary, a different story is told.

Atilla wasn't evil, he was a hero that led his people to their greatest heights.
Atilla brought together incredibly diverse tribes of people. He led them against larger oppressive forces who desired them to abandon their history and traditions. He led them to the doorsteps of their oppressors, forced the oppressors to leave them to their ways, and even turned their oppressors into allies.
To many, the Legacy of Atilla the Hun is that of a savior.
What Will YOUR Legacy Be?
The truth about Legacy is something we don't talk about often.
However, IF you create anything worth being called a "Legacy", you will be remembered both as a hero and a villain.
This is something unavoidable. Some people will always look for what was great about you. Others will only seek out how to turn you into a villain.
Understanding the Legacy you want to leave can be beneficial.
However, Leaders must also understand that many will not agree - we must have the Courage to pursue our vision regardless.
